Maple Hill Recieves Top Honor...PLATINUM P.B.I.S Status
What is P.B.I.S.? Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (P.B.I.S.) is a set of ideas and tools that schools use to improve the behavior of students. The California P.B.I.S. Coalition recognizes schools for their implementation and fidelity of P.B.I.S. The Coalition gives out Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum awards. We earned the highest honor and we are proud of our achievements in cultivating the whole child.
P.B.I.S Trait of the Month: Perseverance
"If At First You Don't Succeed, Try, Try, Try Again"-William Edward Hickson
This month, our whole school is learning more about Perseverance and how to apply it to our own lives. Students will be developing and monitoring their own personal goals. They will be taught how setbacks are inevitable, but opportunities for growth. Perseverance ties in with our Social and Emotional Learning.
Social and Emotional Learning at Maple Hill
What is Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)?
SEL is an approach to teaching our students to understand and manage their emotions, set positive goals, feel and show empathy, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. The graph below highlights the five competencies of SEL.
This month, we have been teaching the students about "Self-Management" and how to control our breathing when we feel overwhelmed by our emotions.
Social and Emotional Learning Parent Tip-Promoting Mindful Breathing
Here is a site that shows a lot of simple breathing exercises that you can do with your child.
Being On Time and Attending School is Crucial For Student Success
Let's Get Back to Being an All BLUE School on the California Dashboard!
The California School Dashboard provides valuable information on multiple topics regarding school and student performance. The information, which includes test scores, graduation rates, and college and career readiness, is aimed at helping all students succeed.
Each school district is rated on six state indicators: Chronic Absenteeism, Suspension Rates, English Learner Progress, Graduation Rate, College/Career Readiness, ELA (English Language Arts) state test scores, and Math state test scores.
At the elementary level, there are four local indicators: ELA state test scores for 3rd-5th, Math state test scores for 3rd-5th, English Learner Progress on the ELPAC (state test for K-5 English Learners), and Suspension Rate. Schools are evaluated on their test scores, but also on how they improve or decline over time. For each indicator, an elementary school is assigned one of five performance levels. From highest to lowest, the categories are: Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red.
In 2016-2017 Maple Hill was an ALL BLUE school. We earned a blue ranking in all four local indicators. In 2017-2018, we earned BLUE in ELA and Math. Our test scores were unbelievably high and we had so much growth! We did not receive a color for English Learner Progress, since it was year two of the ELPAC state test and there is no comparative data. Unfortunately, we earned yellow in Chronic Absenteeism. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as a student missing more than 10% of the school year. Our school year is comprised of 180 days, so any child that misses 18 days or more is considered chronically absent. Please take your family trips during vacation time and not during the school year. And if your child is well enough, bring them to school and don't keep them home. Let's get all blue for our school!

September 5th is Family Night Out at Chuck E. Cheese's in Diamond Bar. Skip cooking dinner that night and bring the family to Chuck E. Cheese's! It's a night to hang out with Maple Hill Staff and Families. Plus, we earn 20% of the proceeds from the night.

Recycling Wednesdays are BACK!! Starting September 4th
Maple Hill has had a school-wide recycling program for over 20 years! We value teaching our students the importance of being "green". Every Wednesday, we encourage families to bring aluminum cans and plastic bottles from home to the front of the school to be recycled. All of the money that we earn goes back to the kids. Drop off your recyclables, have your child sign their name on the poster, and they receive a recycling sticker to wear.
Save Your Box Tops
Turn in your Box Tops and Maple Hill earns money! For every TEN your child turns in, they get points for a classroom pizza party.
