Emory Tutors Update
The Educational Studies Division at Emory University closed last year and with it, we lost many Emory tutors who were sent to us by two professors in that department. Many of us loved having the extra help and it is sad to see that resource disappear; however, I have been working closely with two Emory students in an effort to create a tutoring club at Emory University. We have already received a few tutors but not enough to place in all teachers' classrooms, as previously requested. The few tutors we have received are currently working with ESOL students in tutorials. We predict getting more volunteers in the future, and I promise to keep you posted. - A. Salivia
Scholarship Information
Dr. Hugh Flax, an Atlanta-based accredited cosmetic dentist, has dedicated his career to advancing the profession of dentistry and the care that patients receive by serving as an international lecturer, past president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), and founder of the Georgia Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. His passion for education has inspired him to offer several scholarships, including the “Why My Teacher Makes Me Smile Flax Scholarship.” Here is a link to Dr. Flax talking about the scholarship program on CBS46.
ELIGIBILITY
To qualify for a scholarship, the applicant must be a senior Georgia high school student in good academic standing with a cumulative minimum GPA of at least a 3.0 (4.0 scale) who is on-track to apply for accredited post-high school/post-secondary educational programs (including accredited two- and four-year college, universities, vocational-technical and trade schools) pending receipt of a high school diploma.
APPLICATION PROCESS
An applicant must write a 400-600-word essay answering the question “How has a specific teacher (past or present) positively impacted your life and made you smile?” The essay must be submitted in Microsoft Word format or PDF format. Essays will be judged on effectiveness in presenting a personal point of view, clear communication, and originality. Please include the teacher’s first and last name, grade taught and school, and email address. Students can submit an application beginning January 2 at http://www.flaxdental.com/teacher-makes-smile-flax-scholarship/.
DEADLINE
The call for submissions open January 2. The deadline to submit an application is May 29.
NHS Canned Food Drive - From Ms. Rascoe
The NHS Canned Food Drive kicks off this week and runs through December 9. Please encourage your students to participate. I will leave it up to you if you want to focus on one class period, or all of your classes. The class(es) with the most cans will once again win donuts, but the real winner is the food pantry at Decatur Cooperative Ministry. Alternatively, school clubs can also participate.
Can I please ask this year that you try and count the cans as they come in? It is a huge undertaking for us to count all of the cans, especially when the numbers run into the thousands. I trust you all to be honest with your totals. Let me know if you need boxes and I will have my NHS members deliver those to your room.
Thank you for your support.
