Lyman Elementary
March 2023
Note From Mr. McPhee
Dear Lyman Parents and Guardians,
As the snow melts away to spring and the weather begins to warm, I am reminded of the growth I am seeing in our students and classrooms. Our students are not only growing physically, but there is significant growth in the math, English language arts, science, social studies and their critical problem solving skills and knowledge. It is exciting for me to watch your children acquire the tools they need to move to the next grade level and beyond. Our dedicated and hardworking staff are making sure every child reaches their potential as learners and citizens.
I want to thank the Lyman Parent Group for their continued efforts to support our students and school community. Please join us for our parent group meetings at the beginning of each month and see how you can help our school continue to grow.
The second week of March is Education Support Professionals week. I want to thank our hard-working paraprofessionals Toni Storie, Ann Driscoll, Ronda Oudman, Amy Hughes, Chrissy Holmes, Stephanie Gahan, our custodian Lori Ireland and our kitchen supervisor Shannon Wright for their tireless efforts and dedication to our school and your children. They make Lyman Elementary a great school every day.
This time of year is especially important for our third through sixth grade teachers as they prepare our students to take the Smarter Balanced Assessment. Stay tuned for more information about these assessments in math, English and science. We will send home updates and tips for student success for these important Washington State assessments over the next month.
Thank you for your continued support of our great school and community!
Sincerely,
Scott A. McPhee

Kindergarten Registration
The Sedro-Woolley School district is looking forward to welcoming all kindergarteners for the 2023 – 2024 school year. Children who will be five years old by August 31, 2023, are eligible to register to enter kindergarten in the fall of 2023. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of early registration. Lyman’s in-person registration date is April 13th from 5-7 pm. Online registration is also available on the district website starting March 1st.
What to Bring:
- Birth certificate
- Immunization records
- Proof of residency
Students will not be able to start school in the fall without these items on file.
What You Will Receive:
- An appointment for fall kindergarten screening
- Information about kinder-start (first week of school)
We encourage all families living within our boundaries to participate in early registration so the school district has time to plan well for your child’s arrival. We certainly look forward to welcoming all kindergarteners and families. Please share this information with friends, family, and neighbors who may have a student starting Lyman next year.
Second and Sixth Grade Highly Capable Testing
Our District's Highly Capable Program is coming up on the season for screening (short testing) students to identify individuals for giftedness in a variety of academic and cognitive areas. All 2nd and 6th grade students will be screened, as well as individual students from other grade levels who were referred in November. We look forward to identifying students who may benefit from additional rigorous learning opportunities next academic year! This screening is the first step towards including your student in next year's Highly Capable Program and enrichment learning opportunities.
The screening exam is called the "CogAT Screener", and will take place in March. Students who are identified from this first exam will then be given the opportunity (per your approval) to take a longer, more-complete giftedness-identification test. If your student is identified in this first phase of the qualification process, you will receive a letter asking for your permission to further test your student.
For questions or comments, please reach out to the District's Highly Capable Administrator, Tim Gjefle, at tgjefle@swsd101.org.
