2023 State Assessments for CMS Students Begin This Week

On Monday, January 30th, we will begin the series of state assessments that measure student progress/student achievement through the course of the 2022-2023 school year. Select students will take the ACCESS for ELLs assessment that measures language progress among English Language learners. Over the course of the next several weeks, CMS students will take the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) - Alternate or the ACAP - Summative.

Each of these assessments are used by our faculty to measure student achievement, plan individual student instructional or intervention plans, and design our instructional schedule for the next school year. In the days ahead, CMS will be sharing with students and their families information on how we are working to continue our daily standards-based instruction in our core classes, as well as preparing your students for success on the spring test administrations.

Currently, students are continuing to work through their iReady MyPath lessons in math or English Language Arts. Please encourage them to work through these through the remainder of the semester. Last week, we sent home your student's Middle-of-Year (MOY) iReady Diagnostic results. If you have any questions regarding your student's progress, please contact a teacher, counselor, or administrator, and we will be glad to review the reports with you.

Please take a moment to review this information as it is shared as our school and your family partners to MOVE THE NEEDLE as we increase student achievement at Corner Middle School!

Message for 8th Grade Opportunities with BSCC Educational Talent Search

Good afternoon parents, teachers, counselors, educators and potential students. My name is Toby Camp and I am Bevill State Community College's Educational Talent Search Academic Advisor for Corner 8th-12th grades. I appreciate you letting me into this group. I was told about it by Ms. Chloe Whitaker Hackney. I wanted to introduce myself and to give a face to the person your students may speak about in reference to ETS.

So what is ETS? It is a pre-college, federally, grant-funded program through the Department of Education, therefore it is 100% free to students who qualify. And once your student meets the eligibility requirements and has come to our once-a-month meetings (20-30 min meetings in school), they are eligible for all of the benefits and can even be in ETS from the 8th grade all the way to their senior year! I have listed a flier below that has a scannable QR code that will lead you to an application if you are interested. Or, physical copies can be filled out and returned to the school. Here are a few things that ETS does for Corner and your students:

*Financial Literacy help

*Free College Tours (We went to Mississippi State last summer)

*Free Career/Cultural Trips (We went to the Space and Rocket Center)

*Career and Post-secondary Advisement

*Scholarship help, among so much more listed below.

If you have any questions feel free to call me or email me. Email is usually best because I may be out of the office and at other schools, but if I miss your call I will always make it a point to get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you all so much and take care,

Toby Camp

Message for Members of the CMS Concert Band and Their Families

Hello Concert Band!

With the Spring Semester in full swing, it is time to start thinking about MPA prep. Every year, Jefferson County Schools requires each band program to take at least one group to Music Performance Assessment - a band "contest" where judges will give you comments and/or a grade for your performance.

Since this concert will be performed in front of a judging panel made up of some of the biggest names in the Alabama band circles, we have a few extra rehearsals after school to make sure that our performance is the absolute best we can make it. While these rehearsals have been scheduled since the beginning of the year, your student only has to come to 2 extra rehearsals - the one for their instrument/section and the full band rehearsal (see below for more details).

Should you or your families have any questions, please contact me at dsaunders@jefcoed.com or at 205-379-3230.

Mrs. Debra Saunders
