Opportunity Week
This is a week for all of our students to complete first semester. We’re calling these early release days “Opportunity Days,'' as students will be afforded final opportunities to demonstrate proficiency on content learning targets and earn credits toward graduation. Most of these opportunities should improve student success.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are half days, with a 12:00pm dismissal and buses departing at 12:05pm. No school for students on Friday.
The standard 2:35pm buses will be running for any students who might have organized some additional support time with their teacher or a Westview staff member.
Last Week of Semester One
(Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday are half days. No school Friday.)
Westview Staff Spotlight
Kara Ferris
1. What classes do you teach and/or programs and activities do you work with?
I teach 10th grade American Studies and I am the Advanced Programs Coordinator.
2. How long have you been at WHS?
This is my 15th year at Westview and 20th year teaching
3. What do you enjoy most about the Westview community?
I've had the opportunity to work with so many wonderful students. I also feel so lucky to be a part of the Westview staff. I've learned so much and developed some amazing friendships in my time with this community.
4. If you could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it - metaphorically speaking, getting a message out to millions or billions - what would it say and why? It could be a few words or a paragraph. It could be someone else's quote or any quotes you think of often or live your life by. Why would you put it on a billboard today?
I am still learning
5. What is something about you that many people at Westview might not know? (Hobbies, talents, interests, fun facts, etc...)
Most people already know that I like to bake when I have a moment. I have a big record collection and like to bring albums to play in class. I love squirrels and think they are hysterical. Oh, and when I was a senior in high school, I had an internship here at Westview to learn more about teaching. Who would have thought that this is where I would end up?
Spring sports registrations are open!
How to Support Your Student (Continued)
We want to to continue to provide support and resources for our Westview community. Our Westview and BSD counselors and social workers have created the following information and resources to support our students and families:
As we send students off for the weekend, we want to let you know that children who are already vulnerable may be at greater risk due to exposure to the suicide of a peer. If you or your child needs help right away;
Call National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255),
Call Washington County Crisis Line at (503) 291-9111,
Take your child to the nearest emergency department.
This article Teens and suicide: What parents should know is another resource for you to learn more about talking with your student about suicide.
Additional Support Services:
Youth Era: To learn more about Youth Era please visit www.youthera.org.
Youth Era is a nonprofit organization that provides peer support to youth. YE offers support provided by certified Youth Peer Support Specialists who use several evidence-based practices in their approach to working with communities, schools and youth. K-12 COVID Screening Program: Students who test positive should not participate for 90 days
*This is only is for the families who participate in the weekly COVID testing. *
Good afternoon schools and school districts,
We appreciate all of your efforts during this challenging time.
With the omicron variant surging, we are seeing more students testing positive for COVID. Those students who test positive should not participate in our program for 90 days after receiving their results, as they will continue to test positive during this time period. These repeat positive tests consume testing supplies and staff time, and distract us from helping students who are healthy or are just being diagnosed with COVID for the first time. Students with a positive result do not need to opt-out of the program, but they do need to pause their participation until the 90-day period has ended.
We need your help in spreading the word to families. Please include the message above in any communications that you might be distributing to students involved in the program.
If you have any questions, please reply directly to this email or let your OHSU point-of-contact know. Thanks very much for your help.
Best,
The K-12 COVID Screening Program team at OHSU
Update on COVID Testing for Students at School
Students may get a COVID-19 test at school if:
- They develop primary symptoms including cough, fever > 100.4, shortness of breath, chills, and new loss of taste/smell while at school
- They develop non-primary symptoms including muscle or body aches, headache, sore throat, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, new nasal congestion or runny nose while at school.
To be tested, students need permission forms on file with their schools.

Indoor Mask (Reminder)
We have had some extended breaks lately and want to make sure all of our students remember masks are required at all times unless you are eating in the cafeteria or a designated lunch space. It is important we all do our part to keep everyone safe. Wearing a mask includes covering your nose as well. We are asking all food be consumed in designated eating spaces and not in the hallways while traveling between classes. The more we can ensure we are masked around each other, the better chance we have to maintain a desired level of safety. We appreciate our students following this and our parents and guardians reminding them from home.

Beaverton School District Antiracist Vision Statement
The BSD School Board unanimously voted to adopt an Antiracist Vision Statement. Informed by the work of the Beaverton Multicultural Educator Community (BMEC) and the 40-member Equitable Policies Task Force made up of students, family, community members and staff, the vision statement will guide our implementation of our Every Student Belongs Policy (ACB) and help ensure that our schools are safe and welcoming learning spaces for all.
Antiracist Vision Statement
Every student and employee has the right to learn and work in a safe and inclusive school environment that honors their race, color, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability and national origin.
Beaverton School District owns that our student outcomes currently point to our part in perpetuating institutional racism, and we commit to actions that address the current culture that is leading to these outcomes. Schools are critical in providing safe and creative opportunities for people to learn about different cultural and racial identities, have conversations about pressing issues and correct injustice wherever it exists. We commit to eliminating the structures, policies and practices that perpetuate inequities in our schools and in our community.
Beaverton School District will authentically engage each student, family and staff member to build connection, uplift understanding and truly value the diversity of our school communities. We will work to dismantle policies and systems that perpetuate institutional racism and barriers to education and other school-related activities. Students and families of color will see themselves represented in curriculum, materials, instruction, classrooms and all school activities in our district. Our district will honor, respect, represent, engage with and be accessible to students and adults from all communities.
Eliminating racism and all forms of bias is fundamental to our work — not just a part of our work. We commit to removing racism, white supremacy, hate speech and all forms of bigotry from our schools and communities.
Our district will:
- Seek and incorporate student, family, educator and administrator input in decision-making processes.
- Provide ongoing anti-bias and antiracist education to every staff member.
- Enforce Every Student Belongs procedures to prevent, interrupt and stop racist and biased incidents among students and between staff and students or community members.
- Create an inclusive learning community that honors, respects, represents, engages and is accessible to learners from all communities.
- Create permanent district funding and resources to promote equitable policies, structures and practices for BIPOC students and other marginalized groups.
- Implement policies, procedures and professional development to confront and eliminate conscious and unconscious racism and review these policies and procedures regularly to ensure we are meeting our commitments.
