A Note From the Principal
Dear Woodholme Families,
We had a busy March with the Partnership of Assessment for Readiness of College and Careers (PARCC) spring testing for our students in grades 3-5. The PARCC end of year testing will take place the first week of May, so check out the April/May calendar in the newsletter so you can avoid those important testing dates when scheduling dentist and doctor appointments for your 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.
This year seven Baltimore County Public Schools educators have been named finalists for the school system’s annual Teacher of the Year award for 2014-2015. Congratulations to Ms. Jessica Cybulski, a Grade 2 teacher at Woodholme, for making the top 7 finalists! “Our Teacher of the Year program allows us to showcase the high quality educators employed by Baltimore County Public Schools," said Superintendent Dr. S. Dallas Dance. “The seven teachers named finalists this year exemplify the commitment BCPS has to ensuring that we graduate globally competitive students.” The Teacher of the Year winner will be announced on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at a BCPS Recognition Ceremony.
When the new Lyons Mill elementary school opens this fall, Woodholme’s enrollment will be reduced. Current zoning estimates place the possible enrollment around 800 students, which is still considered overcrowded; however, the current enrollment of almost 950 students will at least find some relief until a future northwest school location is found and another school built for the area. This reduction of students for next year will also result in a reduction of staff members, so some staff members will be transferring to the new school in the fall. We would like to welcome back Mr. Alan Walker (Physical Education) and Mr. McKinley Broome (Grade 4) as both have recently returned from medical leave. Mr. Joshua Harris was filling in for Mr. Broome, and we are lucky that he will be staying with us for the rest of this school year to take over a reading specialist position vacated by the recent departure of Mrs. Joanna Lewis. Mrs. Shanel Jackson-Martin has also recently moved on to a non teaching position, and we wish both Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Jackson-Martin the best of luck!
We are waiting to find out the official last day of school, and once the Board of Education determines the end of the year schedule, we will let you know since it impacts our end of the year activities. Spring break begins on Friday, April 3rd. We hope everyone gets to enjoy some well deserved relaxation and family time!
Happy Spring,
Principal Young
