February Calendar Change - A Message from D49

Message sent via email to families on Dec. 8, 2022:

Greetings Falcon Zone Families,

As we close the second quarter of the 2022-23 school year, we are sharing a change to next semester’s calendar in the Falcon Zone and some exciting news for our schools.

The FZ professional learning day scheduled for Feb. 10 will switch to Feb. 7. This adjustment will allow us to spotlight the incredible accomplishments of our staff and students at a national conference here in Colorado Springs.

On February 6-7, 2023 the Falcon Zone will host the national showcase for the annual National Conference on Digital Convergence (NCDC). Educators from across the U.S. will travel to Colorado to see instructional processes related to personalized learning in action. The Falcon Zone has worked incredibly hard to integrate these strategies to meet and/or exceed the individual learning needs of our students. As a result of this work, the Falcon Zone is recognized as a national role-model organization for this style of education, and we are honored to serve as the site for the national conference.

On Monday, Feb. 6, our schools will operate on a normal schedule as we welcome educators from across the nation to see our classrooms in action. Conference attendees will visit each of our Falcon Zone schools to witness firsthand the learning processes taking place and to ask questions of our staff. On Tuesday, Feb. 7, numerous staff members from each of our zone’s schools will attend the conference. Some students will also attend, and show what they do in their classrooms!

To accommodate this opportunity, all Falcon Zone schools will shift the professional learning day scheduled for Friday, Feb. 10, to Tuesday, Feb. 7. Students will not attend school on Feb. 7. Falcon Zone Schools will operate on a normal schedule on Friday, Feb. 10. This shift will only affect the Falcon Zone. The rest of the district will still follow the scheduled professional learning day on Feb. 10.

We are sharing this information early to allow time to make necessary adjustments to your schedule. We look forward to sharing stories, pictures and videos with you after the NCDC conference. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your building principal. We appreciate your understanding and support.

Valentine's Day - February 14th

Valentine's Day celebrations will occur at WHES on Tuesday, February 14th! Students are able to exchange Valentine's and further communication will come from your child(ren)'s teacher with further details!

We do require that no homemade food be brought for Valentine's or celebrations as sealed and store bought packages have ingredient labels that help us to protect students with a variety of allergies.

Parent-Teacher Conferences - February 16th-17th

Parent-Teacher conferences will take place during the evening of Thursday, February 16th, and throughout the day on Friday, February 17th. February conferences are not required for all students, but all parents have an option to request/schedule a conference. Please watch for an email from your child(ren)'s teacher on Friday, February 3rd, for more information and to sign up for your desired time. Thank you!

Intent to Return Forms - a message from D49

Dear District 49 Families,

During this exciting time, our schools need to gather the intent to return information for their current students and give you a way to update your information quickly. Getting this information from our D49 families helps our schools better prepare for the upcoming school year and plan class sizes and staffing needs. The D49 - Intent to Return Survey for current K-11th grade students is now available electronically through the PowerSchool Parent Portal account by either accessing your Parent Portal account on a desktop computer or the Parent Portal Mobile App (not the D49 App).

Linked here is a step by step resource on how to complete this Intent to Return survey via Ecollect (Desktop).

For a general overview on how to access Ecollect forms through the Parent Portal Mobile App, click here.

If you do not have a Parent Portal account, please refer to the email sent out from District 49 on December 21st, 2022, titled “District 49 Parent Portal Setup Information” for your access information or reach out to your school Registrar.

Thank you.

Health Information

Hi, I’m Shelly Duran and I am the nurse at Woodmen Hills. Below are some reminders regarding health and illness...

  • Medications - All medications, including over-the-counter medications, require a medication form completed by your child’s physician. Student’s may NOT bring medication to school or self-administer any medication. All medication forms and action plans can be found here: https://www.d49.org/domain/1284

  • Immunization Requirements - Colorado law requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases. For more information regarding required immunizations and how to complete a non-medical immunization exemption form can be found here: https://www.d49.org/domain/261. (If you are filing a non-medical exemption, please complete the online module, print and sign the exemption form, and return to the health room.)

  • Illness Guidelines - Falcon School District 49 is following the Illness Guidelines from the Colorado Department of Public Health & Children’s Hospital Colorado. Please refer to these guidelines and keep sick students home. These guidelines are linked below.

  • Phones in the Classroom - Students are not permitted to use classroom phones or personal phones to contact parents in the event of illness. Students must come through the health room to call parents in order for the absence to be excused.

Immunization Letter

Dear Woodmen Hills Families,

The state requires annual communication to all parents/guardians by including the K-12 2023-2024 Parent Immunization Letter for the next school year to be sent through school communication by February 15, 2023. The required notice is linked below.

Sending this letter annually is a state requirement and it is NOT a non-compliance notification.

Nutrition Services Information

Woodmen Hills Elementary School offers breakfast and hot, school lunch each day. You can view more information from D49 Nutrition Services linked here. You can send lunch money in with your child or add money to their account by visiting D49 Nutrition Services. For assistance with meal fees, you can complete the Meal Assistance Application by visiting this link.

Lunch Prices:

  • Elementary:
    • Breakfast $2.50
    • Lunch $4.00
  • Secondary:
    • Breakfast $2.75
    • Lunch $4.35
  • Adult (without milk):
    • Breakfast $3.00
    • Lunch $ 4.75

Federal regulations play a direct role in setting the price of school meals and D49 is required to match government meal reimbursement rates by charging for meals. Updating our rates this year is a difficult, but necessary adjustment to continue providing meals in our challenging economy.

Specials Information / Schedules

Kindergarten and First Grade:

Kindergarten and first-grade students engage in 5 specials, including Art, Music, PE, PBL/Technology, and Library. Specials occur on a daily schedule. Students will have the same special on the same day of the week.

Second through Fifth Grade:

Second through fifth-grade students engage in 4 specials, including Art, Music, PE, and PBL/Technology. Specials occur daily, on a 5-day, ABCD, rotating basis. Students will have the same special for 5 school days in a row (i.e. art for 5 school days, then PE for 5 school days).

The Specials schedule is always available in the WHES Highlights sent weekly via email - the specials rotations link is for all grades, K-5th, and the ABCD monthly rotation calendars are for 2nd-5th grades.

Art Class Information: Students often use materials such as watercolors, watercolor pencils, tempera and acrylic paint, and oil pastels during art classes. While using these materials brings new discoveries and masterpieces, it can also bring a concern for not washing out of clothing, etc. Please consider having your child(ren) wear 'older' clothing items on art days.

PE Information: Students are active during PE class! Proper footwear supports safety and ability to move and engage in a variety of activities. Please ensure your child(ren) wear tennis shoes/sneakers on PE days.
