September, 2016-Office for School Performance-Volume 1
Message from Dayle
Welcome back! Travis and I, and the Office for School Performance team, are excited to support your work this year and are focused on improving communication, including creating a monthly newsletter- the first of which you are now reading.
Relationships with our students are key to our work as we ensure all students are college and career ready. This year we will be sharing some tips and strategies collected from teachers throughout our district. Each week through Hot News we will be sharing one tip and a resource for improving relationships with students. Please look for them. We are also eager to support schools with our strategic plan’s other two focus areas: quality instruction and career and college pathways. We believe in you and are excited for your work with students this year!

Science Adoption
Science K-8:
Physics 1:
This school year we are excited about implementing the new Physics 1 course at Glencoe and Liberty High Schools. This is the first phase of transitioning to the new high school science course sequence. To prepare for the upcoming changes, high school teachers from all four high schools collaborated over the summer, completed PSU’s Physics for the NGSS course with teachers from across the state, and spent a day at Vernier learning and exploring all of the great tools available to foster students in developing a path to critical thinking in science.
Piloting materials for K-8 science and Physics 1 will occur throughout the fall. We hope to form a recommendation for science materials adoption in the winter.
HSD Community Values in Education
During the month of September there will be multiple opportunities for community members—students, staff, parents, business partners, etc.—to provide feedback on our values regarding educational outcomes for students. Data will be collected via a survey available in Spanish and English. It is available to you electronically via the link below, and it will also be available on paper at community forums we will hold this month. This form is designed to get feedback from our Hillsboro School District community regarding the development of K-12 academic programs that benefit all students. As a stakeholder in our community, your voice is important. Responses will be anonymous. Our hope is to identify shared values and highlight similarities and differences across stakeholder groups. Our shared values will drive academic program development. You will learn more about our community engagement process as it continues this fall.
