OECHS Class Updates
English
English I Honors: Next week, we will continue our study of short fiction, with our novel analysis of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. We will begin our preliminary research for our final essay next week. There will have a test on the novel on Friday, November 16.
English IV Honors: This week students reviewed the elements of the Age of Enlightenment and the Age of Reason. We deviated slightly from looking at British Literature to look at the rhetorical elements in Martin Luther King’s Letter from the Birmingham Jail. This work emphasis supporting an idea through the use of ethos, logos, and pathos, which were also highly prized during the Enlightenment and Reason literary periods. King’s work also, once again, shows how writers respond cultural influences. English IV students will now move into the Romantic Period, specifically the Gothic-Romance of Frankenstein. This study will be paired with current, relevant cultural events and current and past relevant responses to those events.
As you know, the Graduation Project is coming to a close. Next week the English IV class will be providing opportunities for students who have or want to finish the project and options for students who choose to opt out of the project completion. From this point forward, no student’s grade will be penalized for opting out; however, grade opportunities will be available for students who wish to continue. Once all details have been finalized, they will be posted in the OneNote Grad Project folder.
Math
Honors Math 2: The current average in first period is a 90 and in second period it is a 91. I will be grading a quiz this weekend and adding it to Power School by Monday afternoon. Students are currently studying how to write a two column proof. We will continue this next week and have a test on Units 4, 5, and 6 next Friday. There will be a notebook quiz on Unit 6 next Tuesday as well.
Honors Math 4: We just finished Verifying Trig Identities and took a quiz Friday, so next week we will start with Solving Trig Equations. When we finish that section we will take a quiz on just solving (likely Thursday). To finish up the Unit we will be looking at the Sum & Difference Identities, and the Double Angle Identities. We should finish the unit next week and have a test the beginning of the following week.
Social Studies
Civics and Economics: We finished up our study of the Presidency this week with our test on Friday. We talked about the responsibilities of the President as a Commander-In-Chief and the role he plays in diplomacy and legislation. We are starting to look at the Electoral College, as well. Next week we will continue learning about the Electoral College by playing a simulation game and finishing our Doodle Notes. We will begin learning about the Judicial Branch next week, as well.
AP WH: This week we finished up our lesson on China and began talking about Feudalism in Japan and Europe. Next week we will have our test on Islam Beyond the Caliphates, Post-Classical China, and Feudalism on Friday. Both A & B Day will have their test together in the Big Room. This is the first test where we will try and complete the test during the actual class time. There will be no writing on this particular test so we can begin to work on a time schedule, so to speak, for the AP Exam coming up in the Spring. Next week we will begin talking about the Mongols, Vikings, and the Black Death.
American History I Honors: We are completing our Unit on Manifest Destiny. Students have their folders containing their study guide, crash course video questions, maps to complete of the trails heading west, Unit V essays/SAQ’s, & Eyewitness to History/primary document questions from the period.
