Comments:
I feel like this was our most complete performance as a team this season so far. Every race this year it seems like we have had 1-2 guys have an “off” day. But today everyone ran well for us. Our freshman boys running varsity, Jonas and Conor, made big strides today. Kurtis had a great bounce back meet from last week’s race at Rim Rock. Besides the overall improvement from the individuals on the team today, what has me most encouraged are our time gaps that are getting smaller. Our 1-5 time gap was only 48 seconds today and the gap from 3-6 was only 25 seconds. As those time gaps get smaller we will become more competitive.

JV Boys were led today by senior Hayden Miller who ran a gritty race and saved just enough for a kick at the end to get the win by 2 seconds. Hayden continues to get better each week and keeps pushing the back of the varsity pack to keep that group getting better. Freshman Ethan Gales had a great run today and nearly broke into our team awards by running sub-21 minutes - an achievement that he’s surely going to get soon. This group of boys continues to run well and improve as a group each time out.

Another win by the girls today, running their season win-loss record to 75-4. These girls are continuing to race well this season with an easy win today against some smaller schools that couldn’t match our depth. A year ago at this meet we had only 4 girls running sub-22 minutes and today all 7 girls on the varsity team ran sub-22 minutes. Also, our #7 runner this year is a full minute faster than last year’s #7 runner at this meet. Numbers like this have us feeling really good about how we are running right now. Something we are working on is closing the time gap between our 3-7 runners and our 2nd runner. It’s good right now, but to reach our season goals it may need to be better.

Comments:
The depth that Eudora showed in the varsity race was really on display in this race. Eudora had 18 of the 34 JV runners in the race today. The JV girls do race with the varsity girls and then the computer splits the divisions after the race ends. After the sorting was complete, it was all Eudora at the top with our girls taking all 10 of the JV medals that were awarded. Many of the girls in this race have not had nice racing conditions all season. With cooler temperatures finally for a race, these girls ran really fast times today. Our top 3 runners in this race, Stella, Liz, and Rachel were all in the top 20 of the race overall giving us 10 girls in the top 20. Senior Carlee Norris ran her first race since her freshman year today. I am so excited for her to race again and she ran great at the same time.
Up Next:
We will race Saturday October 12th at the Pleasant Ridge Invitational hosted on the University of St. Marys’ campus in Leavenworth. This course is the same course that we ran on at our regional meet a year ago, so we are looking forward to returning and giving this course another run.
Varsity Volleyball - Coach Cleveland
EHS @ Bonner Springs
The Lady Cardinals volleyball team had a busy week of competition last week. Starting their week of competition off, the girls faced Bonner Springs on Tuesday at home. The girls had already faced Bonner twice this season and each match went to three sets with an unfortunate loss, not this time though… the Lady Cards rallied and beat the Braves in three sets.
Early in the first set, the Cardinal serve receive struggled to keep the ball in-system. Although the passing wasn’t stellar, the Cardinal attackers found a way to score several points on broken plays and attacking out of transition defense.
Sophomore Harper Schreiner started the second set rattling the Braves serve receive. With Schreiner and senior Delany Franklin in the back court, the braves out-of-system attacking struggled to score points. After the 5-0 run, the Cards and Braves traded 2-3 points on questionable net violations. The ladies continued to rally through the set and crushed the Braves team spirit. Topping off the end of the second set, sophomore Emma Durr set three back-to-back balls to senior Keagan Shockley that resulted in three hard-wood kills!
Throughout set three, the momentum stayed on the Cardinals side of the net. The disciplined defense that the Cardinals were executing was just too much for the Braves. About 10 points in, Keagan Shockley had a monster solo block against a slide attack. Followed up by senior Mia Manley serving a tough ball to the Braves serve receive. Of course the ball at the end of the match was going to be set to their big outside attacker. Unfortunatley for the Braves Harper Schreiner read the ball perfectly and dug up a huge attack down the line. Out of transition, Emma Durr set sophomore Sophia Ewy a perfectly 3-ball set that resulted in a kill! The Cards dominated set three 25-15. If you happened to miss this match, it was a great lesson in “Defense wins games!”
EHS @Spring Hill
On Thursday, the Cardinals traveled to Spring Hill for their last triangular of the season. First match of the night was against Leavenworth. Throughout the match, the Cards and Pioneers traded several points early on in the first set. About half-way through the first set, the Cardinals throttled down and took set one 25-19. In set two of the match the Cards started out slow and struggled to find a solid flow in their serve receive which led to several balls being attacked out-of-system by the Cards. Harper Schreiner stepped up big for her team and played stellar defense in the back-court allowing very few balls to get by her during the entire match. At the net for the Cards, junior Jayla Pierce put up a handful of key blocks. While Mia Manley went on a serving frenzie and aced the Pioneers three times in a row. At the end of the second set, the Cardinals took care of business and finished the match 25-19, 25-23.
The Lady Cardinals dominated match two of the night against Kansas City East. During this match, the Cards had to adjust to a slower tempo match. It took the Cardinals about five points to adjust completely. Final score of this match was 25-6, 25-7.
Third match of the night was against Spring Hill. The Lady Cards faced Spring Hill at the beginning of the season. At their first encounter, the ladies fought hard during a tough four-set match at home. Going into this match, we knew we had to work hard and focus on all the little things defensively. Unfortunately, the Cards struggled in serve receive. Most of the match, our attackers attacked mostly from the back court. The Broncos were just too much for us on the road. We lost the last match of the night 16-25, 16-25.
EHS @Wellsville
On Saturday, the Lady Cardinals traveled to Wellsville for their annual tournament. Early morning in pool play, the girls beat Santa Fe Trail 25-17, 25-16, Osawatomie 25-11, 25-12. During our last match of pool play was against West Franklin, who the Cards had beaten earlier this season twice. No matter the outcome of previous matches, each time we faced them it is always a battle. In the first set of the match, both teams traded points early on. Towards the end of the first set, the Cardinals had a few unforced errors and struggled to rotate out of one rotation. Keagan Shockley and Jayla Pierce were dominant in the front row together for the cards. These two ladies put away several balls that were set to them! The Cards took set one 25-20. The second set of the match was dominated by the Cards. Everything went right for the girls during this set. The serve receive passing from Delaney Franklin and Mia Manley was outstanding. In result, setter Emma Durr easily set up our attackers for success. The score of set two was 25-10. The Cardinals finished 3-0 in pool play and ranked number one going into bracket play.
First match of bracket play was against Anderson County. The Bulldogs finished second in their pool that morning. Set number one, the Cards had another dominant performance with a score of 25-9. Varsity middles, Sophia Ewy and Jayla Pierce were a dominant force at the net! Both girls were consistent on offense and defense the entire match. The Second set of the match, started out slow for the ladies. We have been struggling to find our rhythm and the steady flow in set two in the last few matches. The Cardinals kept plugging along and the fight continued till the very end with a final score of 25-22.
The championship match of the day was against the home team, Wellsville. This was the third championship meeting the Eagles and Cardinals have had in the last three years. The first set of the match was steam rolled by the Cardinals with a score of 25-15. Second set started out slow again for the Cards. We scored points and we played good defense but our energy level was flat. After a short timeout, the Cardinals turned it around and our all around play improved. The Lady Cardinals finished their day winning set two 25-21. The Cards went the entire tournament not giving up a single set. It was a great day of competition and the girls finished with first place medals in their hands. Keagan Shockley and Emma Durr were selected to the All-Tournament team for their stellar play throughout the day! Awesome job ladies!!!
The Cardinal Volleyball Team travels to Louisburg tonight! Please consider making the drive and supporting the girls!
9th grade volleyball - Coach Miller
The Lady Cardinal Freshmen team played Bonner Springs at home on Tuesday and came out with a solid win, 25-9 and 25-19. Serving runs were in our favor with only one missed serve throughout the entire match! Josie Pickett led the team in serves 20 serves for the night with 9 of them being aces. Almost all of the ladies walked away with an ace serve! Such a good win for the night!
On Saturday, October 5th, the lady Cards traveled to Turner for their longest tournament of the season. The girls started off strong with two huge wins in the morning. They played Turner first and won 25-7 in both sets. Bree Gabel, Sophia Sanchez, and Addie Woods led the team in phenomenal serves and aces throughout both sets. Moving on to Blue Valley North the game the girls continued to fight hard and beat them in two sets as well, 25-13, 25-14. This was a game of first ball kills. Makenzie Graves did a great job passing the ball to Kambry Shockley at the net which made it possible to set one of our middles for an attack. Sophia Sanchez and Josie Pickett worked hard to find the wholes on each of their swings. What a fun game! After the lunch break the girls struggled with serves which caused two unfortunate losses against Bonner Springs 24-26, 15-25 and DeSoto 20-25, 21-25. The girls were able to play for 7th to finish the tournament. After hard defeat it is was great to see the girls come back out and play tough again. Bree Gabel went on some necessary serving runs to keep us in the game. Brooklyn Thorne did a great job protecting the net while Addie Woods worked hard on defense. It was a great way to end the tournament with a win against Blue Valley North for the second time 25-15, 25-20.
Now they are ready to face Louisburg! LETS GO!!
Varsity Football - Coach Hayden
The Eudora Cardinal football team traveled to Louisburg Friday to take on one of the best teams in the state of Kansas. Louisburg is a top 10 team coming off a 10-1 season where they won the Frontier League Championship. The Cardinals dominated for 3 ½ quarters, but the first few minutes of the game were won by Louisburg. Louisburg came out on offense first and put together a great drive and went ahead of the Cardinals 0-7. On the ensuing kickoff, Louisburg was able to get the ball back on an onside kick. The Cards were then able to put Louisburg in a 3rd and long situation. Louisburg threw the ball deep and were awarded possession of the ball even though the Card’s defensive back also had possession of the ball and came up with it. The wildcats were able to score after this, making the score 0-14 halfway through the first quarter. The defense was then able to hold Lousiburg all the way through the first half. Louisburg kicked a 41 yard field goal as time expired in the half, with the ball bouncing off the crossbar and in, to take a 0-17 lead going into halftime.
After half, the Cardinals were again tough on defense, sacking the QB several times while forcing Louisburg to punt on several occasions. The Cards held Louisburg scoreless in the second half. Offensively, the cards came out after half with a renewed spirit. They were able to score once to make the score 7-17. On the next drive, Eudora drove the ball to the 1 yd line, and junior QB Zeke Reazin was in the endzone according to film. A Louisburg player pushed Zeke out of the endzone before the official could see that Zeke had scored, leaving 7 points off the board. The coaching staff knows that the Cardinals need to get better in goal line situations and to leave no doubt that we scored.
This was a hard fought game that the Cardinals should have won, but for a few missed opportunities. The team has done what the coaching staff has asked of them and has gotten better every game. It is a young team that started two freshmen and two sophomores on offense. The defensive player of the game is junior Darrell Higgins, who played extremely well on the defensive line. Darrell had 11 tackles and a sack. Several others had big games as well including junior Alex Allison with 11 tackles, junior Will Schreiner with some big plays in key moments, and senior Kaden Hartwell with a huge sack late in the game. The defense needs to make plays when opportunities present themselves, and had opportunities late in the game for some interceptions to sway the game in Eudora’s favor. The Cardinal defense held Louisburg to 132 rushing yards on 44 attempts- an average of 3 yards per carry- and only allowed 17 rushing yards in the second half. Louisburg’s all state quarterback struggled to produce like he normally does against the tough Cardinal defense, only completed 10 passes for 113 yards. The defense is allowing 23.8 points per game this season compared to 33 points per game at this point in the season last year. Offensively, the player of the game is senior Chris Huslig. The whole offensive line was physically dominant and it was tough to pick just one player. The line is getting better at forming their identity and will continue to improve. Statistically, the Cards rushed for 113 yards while passing for 97. Senior Sloan Hayden had 2 receptions for 40 yards, sophomore Silas Etter had 3 receptions for 48 yards, and freshman Jaden Hamm hauled in 1 pass for 9 yards in a key moment in the game. The Cardinals have 200 more passing yards than they did all last season, and have already scored more points in five games than they did in nine last season. The Cardinals have scored 76 points so far this year compared to 19 at this point in the season last year. The team needs to work on redzone opportunities and getting the ball in the endzone and will work on that attitude this week.
This Friday the Cardinals are back home to take on Ottawa in the 2019 Homecoming game, 7:00pm.

EHS @Bonner Springs
Thursday Bonner Springs came to our place for a league match and we were able to come away with a 4-1 win! We came out in the first half and played really fast and they really struggled with it! By doing so they struggled to get the ball out of their end and we created a lot of turnovers which resulted in great scoring chances.
Junior Keaton Herron got the first goal with a nice little tap in off a deflection that came right to him. Junior Colby Lawhorn got goal number two by putting away a cross with his left foot on the back post. Junior Alex Kooken scored goal number three when freshman Parker Hurla took a shot and Alex was there to finish it off with his chest. Goal number four was credited to Colby Lawhorn. We really could have put six or seven away in the first half but got a little unlucky.
In the second half, they had the wind and they really settled down. Our pressure was not as high or fast as it was in the first half. We are still learning how to completely put teams away. They got one back when they just kicked a ball into the night sky from about 45 yards out. The ball floated in at a perfect angle that made it tough for junior goalie Will Christensen to save. Our defense played really solid throughout the night and cleared balls away when needed and really limited their chances.
We are at home tonight against perennial 4A-1A power KC Christian. JV kicks off at 430, but will be playing two 20 minutes halves. The Varsity will kickoff around 5:30.
JV Soccer - Coach Mathern
On Monday the team traveled to DeSoto and once again we came out flat, and De Soto took advantage with 2 early goals. After that we settled down and started playing with some confidence. De Soto was pushing high up the field and leaving big spaces in the middle of the field. When we won the ball back and looked to find out midfielders, we looked great! But again we lacked the final product and could not score. This trend continued in the second half as De Soto came out and scored quickly and our heads dropped. We looked better going forward in the second half knowing that we could attack the middle. Senior Braden Herron had some close shots but just missed wide on both. We also had a couple free kicks that we could not capitalize on in the second half. The final score was 0-4. We look to come out strong and aggressive in a shortened game against KCC Tuesday night at home.
Tonights JV game will be shortened due to a lack of numbers for KCC. We will play two 20 minute halves.
