Congdon Park Celebrates The 2023 Bike Rodeo

On Tuesday, May 16, 2023 hundreds of elementary kids and their families came from all over the city to celebrate and learn more about biking at Congdon Park School. The bike rodeo featured a bicycle obstacle course designed to help kids practice their bicycling skills combined with a bike maintenance clinic for kids to get their bikes tuned up. Bike safety information was provided for kids and families to learn and grow. Kids also learned about hand signals, starting and stopping, and how to properly fit a helmet. Duluth DEVO Mountain Biking also had a mountain biking demo course for kids to try.

Free bike helmets were given away at the event, along with some amazing raffle prizes such as free bikes. Over 360 lbs of food was donated for CHUM. A bike fleet and adaptive bikes were available for those who do not have their own bicycle. The food trucks were well received at the event, with lots of hungry kids. The firetruck and the police car were also a hit and the kids learned a lot and asked a lot of great questions.

A huge Shout Out goes to the Congdon Elementary Parent Teacher Association (PTA) for all of your support and Thank you to the many volunteers that offered their time. This event follows the National Bike to School Day which was on May 3. Congdon students also learned about bike safety during gym class, using Minnesota Safe Routes to Schools Walk! Bike! Fun! curriculum. Together the students and families had fun, learned a lot about bikes and were able to spend time outdoors with friends and family.

Thank you to the following sponsors for time given, monetary donations and/or products donated: Ski Hut, Continental Ski, Marshall Hardware, Spirit Mountain, Duluth DEVO and Duluth Parks and Rec, YMCA, Super One, Miller Dwan Foundation, Bike Cave, Essentia Health, Northland Adaptive Recreation, St. Lukes, Lauralloons, AAA, Stroll and Great Lakes Aquarium. Thank you also to Katei Benziger for coordinating this event.

PTA Corner

We have reached the end of the 2022-2023 school year! I want to send out a sincere thank you to all the families who stepped up and volunteered their time, love, funds, and efforts to our PTA this year. We were able to have some amazing events this year thanks to you! We were able to treat our Congdon staff to meals, treats, raffles, and classroom donations all because of your fall fundraiser giving. Please keep this in mind for next fall when we ask again! We are able to do so much good from the donations you give each year.

Thank you also to everyone who really put in the effort of leading committees this year. Events like the Spring Dance, Walk/Bike to School days, Bike Rodeo, and Teacher Appreciation Week couldn't have happened without you! More hands truly lighten the load and I am so grateful for you!

We will be having our final PTA meeting of the school year on Monday, May 22nd at 6PM in the Congdon Media Center. We will be voting in the board for next year at this meeting. If you have any interest in playing a bigger role in the PTA and want to try out a board position, please send a note to congdonparkpta@gmail.com. We will help you out as much or as little as you want! If you're curious about committees, you can read some explanations at https://congdonparkpta.memberhub.co/w/volunteering and send a note along to the email letting us know what you would be interested in.
