Iron County Historical Museum
2016 Update
Flashlight Tour
On a dark and windy evening on Friday, October 14, over 200 fearless souls attended the inaugural Night at the Museum Flashlight Tour. Guests bravely explored the museum's three floors illuminated only by flashlight. Participants were treated to the eerie clock tower, military room, mortuary, and model railway. Costumed guides told spine-tingling tales of haunted court rooms, possessed dolls, and spooky Victorian death superstitions. Thank you to all who attended and made this event a success! We plan to make the flashlight tour an annual event.
Heritage Days Events
On July 27, the museum welcomed Ironwood native Dr. Jeff Suzik, professor of education at the University of Pittsburgh, for a presentation entitled “Growing Up in the CCC: Working Class Boys and the Great Depression." The CCC was established during the Great Depression for unemployed, unmarried young men between the ages of 17-28. Workers lived in camps and worked on projects related to conservation and the development of natural resources in rural areas. Evidence of the regional work of the CCC can be seen in the Black River Harbor suspension bridge, Copper Falls State Park, Little Girl's Point, Norrie Park, the Montreal Park, and the Mercer Community Center.
Annual Open House
New Museum Projects
- In the spring of 2017, the steeple and four flat roofs on the clock tower will be replaced. This is our major infrastructure project for 2017.
- In December, the flooring in the hallway and kitchen will be replaced with state of the art poured resin flooring.
- During the winter of 2016, museum volunteers sorted our extensive photo collection by categories and placed the photos into archival boxes. Photos are currently being scanned and digitized.
- Our model railroad is up and running thanks to the assistance of Joe Metgzer and the Northwoods Model Railroad Club! The railroad was donated by Ironwood native Leo Johnson and contains many of his favorite local locations.
- We have a new exhibit on the Galaxies, an Ironwood band from the 1960's who sang "My Tattle Tale" and "If You Want to be My Baby".
- As always, we continue to sell our beautiful handmade rugs.
