COMMUNITY UPDATE
GREETINGS COLLINS CUBS-
We had a great week this week together; our last full week at Collins! Next week, we have a half-day of school on Thursday, December 21st, with a dismissal at 11:29. We will not have school on Friday, December 22-January 2nd, 2024 for our Winter Recess.
This week's highlights included: students celebrated a special assembly with author, Jonathan Rand, shopped at the PTO Santa Shop, 6th graders traveled to Beaumont Hospital for Moonbeams for Sweet Dreams, 3rd graders celebrated American Indian/Native American homes with their presentations, blacklight glow bowling, ECSE field trip to the movies, Caroling by our Choir students, and many students participated in our Collins' DECEMBER TO REMEMBER! A very special thank you to all those families for sharing donations to help treat our staff to a DECEMBER to REMEMBER and to all the families for donating their time to run our Santa Shop! We could not do this without your support. THANK YOU!🎄
Next week, I look forward to making this a DECEMBER to REMEMBER for our students with a very special surprise of a movie and/or additional recess! How exciting to celebrate the coming holiday break together!
DECEMBER REPORT CARDS:
Quarter 2 officially completes on December 21st. Please check PowerSchool for report cards and updates from teachers. Just a reminder, our teaching staff will be on vacation beginning Thursday, December 21st in the afternoon and will return with the students on January 3rd should you have any questions. Thank you!
RECESS REMINDERS:
As the break draws closer, please be sure to talk with the students about recess expectations of wearing jackets, hats, gloves, etc. As we have Michigan weather with warm spells and cold spells, our goal is to get the students outside whenever possible. Therefore, we ask that all students follow rules of our playground and keep their jackets/coats on as well as wear them outside. Thank you for your help with this matter. As a reminder, please also be sure to review a few of our rules (keeping hands, feet, and objects to ourselves), especially in the lunchroom and recess as well as on 2nd recess with staff. Thank you for your support!
DECEMBER TO REMEMBER for STAFF and STUDENTS:
A very special thank you to all the families who have graciously donated to our staff!! We are truly appreciative! Families, if you would still like to help donate to the December to Remember, please SIGN UP HERE!
WINTER WEATHER CLOTHING:
Just a reminder that students need to be dressed appropriately for the weather. Our plan and intent is to be outside as much as possible in approved weather conditions. If your family needs additional supplies of hats, coats, or gloves, please contact the office and we can certainly help provide materials to use. Thank you! We are happy to help!
LOST AND FOUND
We have a ton of lost and found items. Please take a minute after school to stop in and collect your children's items. Lots of hats, gloves, and jackets are in the bin by the Breakfast Door.
VISITORS' POLICIES
Prior to entering the building for any reason, all visitors that are coming to the school to pick up their child and/or volunteer must show their driver's license to the camera prior to entering our school. This is a district policy that we must begin enforcing. Please be sure to buzz the front door and hold up your license prior to being allowed into the building. As this is a safety issue for all, we appreciate your understanding! Thank you for your support!
Wishing you all a lovely weekend ahead!

STUDENT BEHAVIOR POLICY
P.A.W.S.
SUPER CUBS SHOW THEIR P.A.W.S!
P: Positive Choices
A: Act Responsibly
W: Will be Respectful
S: Shows Integrity
All Collins Cubs are expected to follow protocols and procedures while showing their PAWS! That includes inside the classrooms, during the hallways, on the playgrounds, and for arrivial/dismissal as well. Teachers will be on the lookout for ways to celebrate students showing their PAWS and have a chance to earn incentives.
UTICA COMMUNITY SCHOOLS PARENT HANDBOOK FOR BEHAVIORS
Please review all Utica Community Schools behavior policies in the Parent Handbook attached to the link below. It is expected that all UCS policies and procedures will be adhered to at any/all school functions and on school properties. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
SCHOOL SAFETY UPDATE
Safety remains a priority for our school. Collins Elementary is once again providing training to our students on our safety protocols. The protocols identify actions that students may be asked to take in the event of a potential incident: hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate and shelter.
The training is provided through a short, animated video. In the video, the teacher – Mrs. Appleton – and her students walk through the different responses in a very relaxed and engaging way for younger children. The script was written by our staff.
The protocols will continue to be part of the training while practicing our regular school safety drills, such as fire drills, security drills, tornado drills, evacuation procedures, etc.)
The video is available for you to review at this link: UCS School Safety: Standard Response Protocol - Elementary - YouTube If you have any questions, please contact our office.
