Letter from Ms. Smith
Dear Hawk Family,
Star Night was amazing last Saturday evening. The skies were clear and the moon was beautiful. Thanks to Mr. Tavel, Discover Science, Georgia Tech and PTA for sponsoring our Star Night. There was so much to see and learn about the moon, Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus.
Our 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Students participated in Book Club this week. There were lively discussions at lunch time about the three books- 3rd Grade read West Meadows Detectives-The Case of the Snack Snatcher; 4th grade A Picture is Worth a Thousand Clues and 5th graders read City Spies (and the sequel). Thank you Parent Volunteers for guiding our students through these three great books.
Next week is Red Ribbon Week. Students will be able to dress up each day and participate in fun activities while learning the importance of making healthy choices and staying drug & alcohol free. Check the schedule below to see how to dress up each day.
On Tuesday, 10/26, 7pm we will have our ASK PTA! for our families can learn how Hembree Springs supports literacy and how you can help at home. Be sure to join us.
If you have not signed and returned to school the Title I School-Family Compact Form, please do so as soon as you can. We need 100% participation.
Please check out the video below to learn about our Capital Improvement Plan for the next 5 years.
Lastly, Monday is a late start day. Your child may arrive until 8:40 am without being marked tardy. Second and third grade will be participating in Career Day while grades kindergarten, first, fourth, and fifth will have a normal schedule. Your child's teachers have planned fun learning for this time on Monday. We are encouraging all students to be on time so that students don't miss any of the learning and fun.
I know that is a lot of information, but don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Stay Strong! Stay Positive! Stay Well!
Sincerely,
AJ Smith

Tips for Parents
Use Red Ribbon Week as an opportunity to continue talking to your kids about drug safety. Let them know that alcohol and drug use will not be tolerated. Let them know that they should only take medicine from a trusted adult, such as a school nurse, a doctor, or a parent, and NEVER from a stranger or another child.
Watch Natural High’s (naturalhigh.org) free celebrity drug prevention videos with your child and use their discussion questions to have a conversation with them about drugs and alcohol. Recommended for grades 2nd – 5th
Get to know the parents of your children's friends.
Work together to set boundaries and monitor behavior.
DID YOU KNOW… (thinking ahead)
Children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don't, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations.

Just a Reminder
Dear Parents or Guardians,
As we approach Halloween, it is important to remind families and students that candy, desserts, baked goods (store bought/homemade), or other edible items are not to be sold or distributed during school hours. Students who do not adhere to this expectation are subject to disciplinary action for insubordination and all food items will be confiscated. Please discuss this expectation and possible consequences with your student(s).
Please know that taking this measure will help us maintain a safe environment for all students. You can help us protect your student(s) by requesting that they not eat anything given to them by another person, anything that they have not brought from your home or anything not in its original sealed package.
Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping all of our students safe at school!
BE THE VOICE
Be The Voice is a student-driven character education initiative, led by 5th grade student Hawks Ambassadors that results in a kinder, more inclusive school environment. The role of our Hawks Ambassadors is to help to create a positive change within the entire school by serving as leaders, displaying positive character traits and engaging the school in activities that promote kindness. Our Hawks Ambassadors will host a Kick Off event launching our Be The Voice initiative during morning arrival on November 1, 2021!
Story Book Character Day
Dear Families,
Hembree Springs Elementary is very excited to announce that on Friday, October 29, 2021, we will be hosting a Story Book Character Day! On this day the staff and students may dress up as their favorite story book character. We are asking that the character come from a book that your child reads and loves (not just from a movie or cartoon.)
Please work with your child to plan a fun and simple homemade costume. We are asking that you work together to be creative with items around the house versus spending money on a store-bought costume. Your child may bring a copy of the book to class that day so that we can take part in several character study activities!
To help ensure students’ feelings of safety and security, violent or frightening costumes are not acceptable. No props, dangerous-looking items, or costume masks covering the face. Please note: face masks will continue to be required per Fulton County Schools’ Covid mitigation policy. See below for examples of acceptable costume choices.
Thank you for making this day possible for your student(s). Please reach out to Carrie McAtee, Curriculum Support Teacher, if you have questions (mcatee@fultonschools.org).
TREATS FOR TROOPS
The PE Department is wanting to help keep our students healthy during Halloween. Have your child bring in 20 pieces of their Halloween candy in a bag to the PE teachers during the time of Oct. 25th – Nov. 5th and they will receive a no jogging pass. This candy will be donated to the men and women in the military.
Thanks!

Coca Cola Tops Drive-UPDATED
We are excited to announce that we are collecting Coca Cola bottle tops through 10/29. The Coca Cola drive bucket is located in front of the cafeteria.
Each bottle top (of coke or your favorite Coca Cola beverage) has a code that turns into money for Hembree Springs, so we thank everyone who has some bottle tops to bring to school before the end of the month.
