Dear East End Families,
A quick reminder of the sign-up for the pizza supper this Thursday evening from 5:00 – 5:30 p.m. at the beginning of Open House Parent University Literacy/STEM Night. The evening will have lots of things taking place! Here’s some notes to help you be ready. Please sign-up by 8:00 a.m. on 10/2 at this link: https://forms.gle/NyykiR9imtobVbpt9
A shuttle bus will run from Old Market Square to the school and continue this route for the evening. Students who ride the shuttle bus with their parents will receive an extra treat for riding.
Here are the plans for the evening:
Pizza Supper from 5:00 – 5:30 in the cafeteria
Open House events in each classroom from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Each homeroom teacher will have a STEM/Maker Space activity for students to do while in the classroom along with a book mark making activity. Students will receive a take-home reading log and a take-home STEM activity. Students who return the take-home reading log and send a picture of their STEM activity to our reading coach, Scarlett Sawyer, by October 31st will receive a book of their choice for the reading log and a STEM recognition item for the STEM activity.
Guest author, Bonnie Walls, will have her books, Topper’s Tale and Topper’s Christmas Tale, for purchase in the cafeteria throughout the evening. She’ll read her books for everyone at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.
We’ll have student readers throughout the evening from 5:30 – 6:30 in the cafeteria.
We’ll have a make a kite activity out of a lunch bag in the media center.
"Doodle Bot Drawings." With Mrs. Wright in the art room throughout the evening.
The PTO will have a Dance Room in the gym throughout the evening.
Dr. Freitag will be on the playground with STEM activities for students and their parents.
Mrs. Stockton will host a Boomwacker Activity throughout the evening in her classroom. Students will play the boomwacker to the tune of Count on Me by Bruno Mars. (The length of sound: the shorter the tube, the higher the pitch. The longer the tube, the lower the pitch.)
We’ll share more details with the flyer that will be distributed this week. We are looking forward to a great week and are especially excited about our Open House Parent University Literacy/STEM Night!
As always, thank you for your support of East End Elementary.

Second Grade ITBS and CogAT Testing 10/16 - 10/20
Dear Second Grade Parents,
Our East End second graders will be taking the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) and ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) beginning Monday, October 16th. Second grade students throughout the state of South Carolina are required by the state to participate in an aptitude test (CogAT) and an achievement test (ITBS) to identify the students for gifted and talented classes that will begin in the third grade. The School District of Pickens County will be administering these tests Monday, October 16 - Friday, October 20.
There are several subtests included in the testing. The schedule of subtests is as follows:
October 16 - Verbal Battery (CogAT)
October 17 – Quantitative Battery (CogAT)
October 18 - NonVerbal Battery (CogAT)
October 19- Reading (Iowa)
October 20 – Math (Iowa)
The screening process for gifted and talented identification is a multi-step process. The first part of that process begins with the administration of the ITBS and the CogAT. These scores provide us information to help in selection for our gifted and talented program, which begins in 3rd grade, as well as gives us important information about the students' aptitude and achievement as measured by each of these tests.
There is no special preparation for each day’s testing. The most important thing is for students to be well-rested. Parents are asked to ensure that students have a full night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast each morning, and arrive to school on time. A breakfast that includes some type of protein seems to help students concentrate better than a breakfast of sugary foods. It is important that students arrive at school on time especially during testing. Research also shows that hydration is important, too. Having plenty of fluids is important for the brain to be able to be alert and allow each child to do his or her best.
Thank you for your help as we administer these tests to our students. A reminder that there is no special preparation. Students need to have a “Can Do” attitude and arrive to school with a full night’s sleep. We will remind them at school to do their best and not worry about the test. Our district’s GT Coordinator will confirm student placements in May 2023 as the GT scoring process is completed. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school. We will be glad to assist you.
Sincerely,
Tammy Day, principal
