CDS Middle School
Weekly Newsletter
September 6th, 2019
From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
Chuseok Break came early this year, but I'm sure our students have welcomed the opportunity to rest and reconnect with family away from school.
This week I had the pleasure of visiting several middle school classrooms to see how students are getting along in the 2019-20 school year. It was wonderful watching our learners collaborate so well and truly engage with the excellent learning opportunities our teachers are providing.
Coming up after the break, we look forward to the beginning of the CDS Math Competition, a Book Swap organized by Ms. Carley, and We Run Cheongna in October.
Have a safe, restful, and well deserved Chuseok break!
Best regards,
Benjamin Scoville
Director of Middle School

NWEA MAP Growth Testing
We want students to do their very best on these exams so that results are accurate representations of their current level of achievement. Teachers use the data from these exams to modify their instruction and better serve your children. If the data isn't reliable, it is more difficult for teachers to target the specific skills your child needs to develop.
Having a conversation with your child about the MAP test will go a long way in ensuring they are motivated to do their best.
If you have any questions or concerns about MAP testing, please feel free to make an appointment with me (Mr. Scoville)... or your child's English or Math teacher.
Collective Uniform Order
We would like to recognize our CDS parents for their efforts to improve our PE uniform and also create some high quality winter gear for our community. CDS parents have also been working hard on a collective order for student uniforms.

SDL Building Confidence through Musical Performance with Mr. Thach
It has been a joy to see students excited to sing and dance and play a host of instruments including the cello, violin, ukulele, etc. These team building exercises help with foundational skills that will be necessary in more formal presentations in the future.

On a Roll in Physical Science with Mr. Keel
This week in 8th grade physical science students engaged in a hands-on lab investigating the speed of a rolling object. This physics lab required students to predict how manipulating the angle of a ramp would affect a rolling object's speed.
Students needed to collaborate, problem solve, and perform the calculations required to find trends in their data. It is still early in the year but these 8A and 8B students are definitely on a roll!

Topography and Landform Creation in Earth Science with Mr. Howell
It required communication, cooperation, and meticulous measurements. Some students simply reveled in the opportunity to mold and shape clay. The topographic maps were all unique and fascinating to look at and compare. Keep up the good work 6th grade!

Critical Reasoning in Social Studies Class with Mr. Drews
This week 6th grade students have begun to explore the reasons the Roman Empire declined and ultimately collapsed. Students participated in a Sort Discussion in which they evaluated and ranked each of the major reasons. Students formulated their own rankings first and then shared their rankings and reasons with their small group which was then tasked with coming to a group consensus on the rankings. Groups then shared and discussed their ranking and reasoning with the entire class. We had great discussions with some very thoughtful ideas and critical reasoning!
After Chuseok break, students will have the opportunity to explore and evaluate why other famous civilizations have also collapsed for their Term 1 project.
