Staff Shout Out
Student services sent a shout out to three of our deserving staff members:
To lead us off, the student services team would love to shine a light on our new SRO, Officer Emerson. Since Officer Emerson has re-joined our team, the faculty has nothing but great things to say. Officer Emerson shows he truly cares, and values the students in this school by being a compassionate individual and addressing student needs in a timely, empathetic manner. We have noticed Officer Emerson's response time to situations is quick and reactive. If Officer Emerson is called to a scene, you can expect him there in a jiff. This effort supports the faculty and gives us more confidence to handle difficult situations. Furthermore, Officer Emerson's conversational skills when handling those situations truly highlight a career that has been dedicated to his community, and his co-workers. Officer Emerson, the student services team, and the faculty of PHS THANK YOU for your commitment and your tireless work.
The student services team would also like to recognize Mrs. Conn for her (ALWAYS) hard work in helping our ESOL students. If you ever turn a corner, you will more than likely see Mrs. Conn out and about making things happen for her ESOL students. We have had many faculty members reach out and say that Mrs. Conn has pushed her ESOL students during testing to make sure they are going to the proper places, at the proper times, so they can complete their required testing. Two of our ESOL students passed their PERT test this week and are one step closer to graduation! Mrs. Conn, we know you never do this for recognition and that student success is your value, but your dedication to our ESOL department is amazing. The student services team thanks you unconditionally for your commitment.
Lastly, the student services team would like to give a HUGE shout out to Dr. Swackard. Testing is occurring throughout the month of September to ensure our students meet their graduation requirements. Behind the scenes is our very own Dr. Swackard making sure all of our students are completing the right tests with their proper accommodations, while still managing to assist teachers and admin with other duties. Coordinating for students in all grade levels and all different exams is a difficult task, but our graduation success would not be as high if not for the efforts of Dr. Swackard. So to you Dr. Swackard, the student services team thanks you immensely for your continuous work with our students.
Two National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists at Pasco High School
All the National Merit Semifinalists in one place. Tampa Bay has 132 of them this year.
These students are among the top 1 percent of high school seniors in the nation. The Tampa Bay area is home this year to 132 National Merit Semifinalists. The students, whose names were announced this week, are among 16,000 high school seniors nationwide competing in the 2020 . National Merit Scholarship program.
They will compete for some 7,600 scholarships worth a total of more than $31 million to be offered in the spring. The process began when these students and about 1.5 million of their peers took the Preliminary SAT as juniors. Their scores were among the highest in their respective states. And, as semifinalists, they represent an elite group- less than 1 percent of high school seniors in the U.S.
Among the factors considered in the selection are a student's academic record, participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, employment, other honors and awards, and SAT scores. Students also must be recommended by a high school official and write an essay.
The fast majority of semifinalists will be named finalists in February.
Congratulations Nicholas C. Gray and Joseph S. Hart!!!
