Persephone

By Aidan N, Drew N, And Ethan S

Summary

Demeter's daughter, Persepone, frolicked in the fields, unaware of what would happen next. She was picking flowers, and then saw the most beautiful flower she had ever seen. A narcissus. This was Zeus' and Hades' plan. As Persephone picked the flower, the earth split. Hades, the god of the dead, picked her up off her feet and put her on his chariot. As they rode to the underworld, Demeter was just realizing her daughter was gone. Once Persephone realized where she was, Hades begged her to stay and be his wife. Demeter was heartbroken. She romed the earth, searching. Soon, she gave up on her godly duties. She soon began to lose hope in her search. Demeter stopped in a little town and rested on a fountain. Demeter looked aged and elderly. A family took her in and gave her the job of caring for her son. Demeter tried to give their son immortality by putting him in the fire every night and taking him out in the morning. When the boy's mother found out, she was outraged. She asked Demeter to leave. Demeter was angry. She showed her true self and told the woman the secret of immortality. The family built a temple on a hill and Demeter blessed it. Demeter then went to Zeus, questioned other gods, and found out Zeus' plan. She demanded her daughter be brought back. Zeus sent Hermes to get Persephone. As Hermes got Perseophone, he realized she had become the true Queen of the Underworld. As she left, Hades gave her some pomergranite seeds. Persephone ate them. Now, she was forever tied to the Underworld. From then on for all of time, Persephone went to the world above and to Demeter for spring and to Hades for the winter. This is also the reason for the seasons.
