For your last newsletter to parents:

Don’t throw away your car rider hangtags! Just a reminder that we will only be providing hangtags to our kindergarteners and new families next year. Replacement hangtags for those lost will be available for $1 each. You can help to be sure they are easily readable in the fall by tracing over your name with a black permanent marker. Please use all capital letters and use the whole space provided so that it will be easily readable. Store your hangtags in your glove compartment so that they are protected from light and kept safe until next school year. Thanks for your help!

Student (and staff) Persuasive Essays

Just a reminder that we have been asked to help show there is public interest in a YMCA and a library in Holts Summit. Please discuss the "what ifs" with your class write to one or both of the following:

Why should Holts Summit have a library? What kind of programs and activities would you want to do there?

Why should Holts Summit have a YMCA? What kind of programs and activities would you want to do there?

Please turn any that your class writes in to me by Friday, May 13.

Character Plus Read Alouds

Our "Forgiving" study ends on Friday, May 13. After you read the character book aloud next Friday, please send it to the office. We'll start up again next year!

End of the Year Awards to Record on Cumulative Files

A good question was asked: What awards should be recorded on the yellow cumulative file? Please be sure to record the following awards at a minimum:

  • Reading Circle
  • Math Hall of Fame
  • SRO Award (all quarters)
  • Central Bank Citizenship Award
  • All 5th grade awards presented at promotion

It's getting to be that time of year.....

It's that time of year when things get crazy busy with activities. Carey takes a lot of calls from parents asking questions about things that are going on: programs, fundraising, field trips, etc. If you are doing something and you send special instructions home with kids (ie permission slips, practice times, due dates), please be sure to give Carey and Lyndsey a copy of that so they can answer questions. Thanks!

Summer School

Students WILL be able to take SRC quizzes over the summer. That is something that could be included on summer school goal sheets, particularly for students who are needing enrichment goals.

Summer Professional Development

Summer Professional Development is open on My Learning Plan. The district always wants to allow JCPS the first opportunity to sign up before opening those opportunities to folks outside of the district. JCPS plans to open the professional development to individuals outside of JCPS on Monday, May 9. If you are interested in any of the professional development, please try to sign up before Monday!

End of the Year Cut-off Dates

  • The last day to take Reading Counts Quizzes is going to be Friday, May 6.
  • The last day to take the SRI/FRA is going to be Friday, May 6.
  • The last day for students to charge meals in the cafeteria is Monday, May 9.
  • All student library books are due Tuesday, May 10.

Important Information for 2016-2017

There have been some changes to our three contracted days prior to school starting for 2016-2017 that I need to put on your radar before you leave for summer break.

  • Teachers who are not under an extended contract because they have been in the district less than three years will return for 3 work days beginning on Monday, August 15.
  • As far as I know, opening session will be on Monday, August 15.
  • ELEMENTARY OPEN HOUSE IS ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 16 FROM 5:00-7:00 PM THIS YEAR. A lot of discussion has occurred regarding the things that need to be done AFTER the open house in order to be truly ready for the first day of school and so this date has been changed this year.
  • Sometime during those three days, there will be potentially 4-6 hours of PD at each building focused around ICLE and the district behavior supports that will be put in place.

All of you are SO conscientious about having your rooms ready and preparing for our kiddos that I wanted you to know what those three days might hold so you can plan accordingly. Sometimes knowing allows us to plan ahead so it isn't stressful and overwhelming.
