TELPAS Testing 2023
TELPAS is an assessment program for students in Texas public schools who are learning the English language. Texas annually assesses the English language proficiency of students who have been identified as Emergent Bilingual Students (EBs) in four language domains—listening, speaking, reading, and writing. TELPAS evaluates the progress that each EB makes in becoming proficient in the use of academic English.
Students in grades K-12 that have been identified as an EL are required to take TELPAS. This includes EBs whose parents have declined bilingual or English as a Second Language (ESL) program services. They will stop participating in TELPAS when their language proficiency assessment committee (LPAC) determines that they are proficient in the English language and have met reclassification criteria. Once a student has met the state’s reclassification criteria, they will no longer be identified as an EB and will not have to participate in TELPAS.
Per TEA guidelines, listening/speaking and reading/writing assessments are administered online. All sessions will start at 7:15 AM on test day. The Spring 2023 testing schedule is as follow:
February 22-24 – Select EB students will attend one test session for TELPAS Listening and Speaking.
March 1, 2023 – All 9th, 10th, and 12th grade EB students will attend their reading test session.
March 8-10, 2023 – All 11th grade EB students and any EB students who have not tested will attend their second test session.
**Test date/time notices will be delivered to all EB students by their English teacher or their 3.5 teacher.
All absences for testing will not count against exemptions and all work will be allowed makeup.
