Checking for Undestanding
As a teacher, I decided that I wouldn't put my students through what I had gone through. I would ask questions to the class in general and would check for individual understanding during my daily conferences with my students. This method, however, was not guiding my instruction. I didn't know what students knew or didn't know until I conferenced with them. If I would have done quick checks for understanding during the lesson, I would have been able to change my delivery immediately instead of after I had already taught the lesson.
Unfortunately, when I was a student cell phones had not been issued to the general public, and using technology in the classroom meant the overhead projector, so my teachers could not have used the resources listed below, but you can! These resources afford teachers the opportunity to do quick checks for understanding to immediately gauge instruction.
Poll Everywhere
"Poll Everywhere is a simple application that works well for live audiences using mobile devices like phones. People participate by visiting a fast mobile-friendly web page for your event, sending text messages, or using Twitter."
Padlet
"Padlet is a virtual wall that allows people to express their thoughts on a common topic easily. It works like an online sheet of paper where people can put any content (e.g. images, videos, documents, text) anywhere on the page, together with anyone, from any device."
Exit Ticket
"ExitTicket is a student response system, designed by teachers to achieve one simple idea: Accelerate student achievement."
