December 21st-January 3rd-Winter Break-NO SCHOOL

What is new?

In just a few short days we will begin Winter Break! How fast this month has flown by. We are busy wrapping up 2nd quarter next week as well.

On the 17th, we will have our annual Polar Express Day at BP. We will get to wear our pajamas, drink some hot chocolate and watch the Polar Express. :) The following day is our Winter party. It will be begin at 9:30-10:15. You may choose to take your child with you at the end of the party or have them stay. The remainder of the AM will consist of lunch shortly after the party and some fun winter activities within the class.

I have begun administering the Fountas and Pinnell reading test on all students. The window will extend to the 18th of December. Thus far I am proud that we are almost all reading at least a level C book or higher. Their goal for the the Winter is an Instructional C.

Once I collect all of their reading level data your child will be bringing home more books on their level come the beginning of January. The books will be sent home on a weekly basis and they can return them at the end of the week for new books. My guided reading groups will be still sending home books in pouches that they will need to return to the classroom library. A little break down of Guided Reading groups looks like this: We do some word work activity at the beginning, introduce new words we may read in our new book, take turns reading. The next time I meet with that group we will reread the book, do more word work then they take that book home to read. I meet with some groups daily, some every other day depends on their needs. I will really be able to set my groups once every child has a true reading level.

Sight Words next week: six, seven, eight, nine, ten

Words to practice at home: a, all, at, am, an, and, be, big, black, by blue, brown, can, day, do, five, for, four, go, good, green, I, it, in is, let, like, little, look, me, my, no, not, one, orange, pink, purple, play, red, run, said, see, stop, the, three, to, today, two, up, us, was, we, white, will, yellow, yes, you.

What we learned!

Readers Workshop-We have been doing an Author Study on one of our favorite authors-Mo Willems. Last week we looked closely at Elephant and Piggie books and looked at our noticings. This week we studied Pigeon books. We ended this week by making our own Pigeons. :)

Writers Workshop-As we wrap up Opinion writing, we will doing our 2nd Author Celebration next Tuesday for all Kindergarten classes. We have worked hard on stating our opinion on the 1st page, stating why, adding detail and using writers craft such as capitalization, punctuation and spaces.

Math Workshop-We have been doing some reviewing and reteaching on certain standards and will continue to do so until winter break. During this time when I am reteaching, your child is doing math stations that are connected to our previous standards.
