Important Health Information from the Nurse
Parents, flu activity in Collin County remains widespread and increasing. We are seeing more cases of the flu or flu-like-illness this year. Flu season typically peaks in February, but it does last through MAY. Therefore, it is not too late to have yourself or those in your family vaccinated against the flu. While flu vaccines are not always 100% effective in preventing illness, studies show they do reduce the risk of flu-associated hospitalizations, deaths, and prevent severe illness/symptoms if you do get sick (CDC).

Flu Symptoms
Please familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of the flu and keep your child home if they exhibit them and seek medical treatment as early as possible. Flu antivirals are recommended if you are diagnosed with the flu, but work better if treatment is started within 48 hours of symptom onset. Influenza usually comes on suddenly and may include fever, headache, body aches, tired/fatigue, cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, nausea. It is important to note that most people with the flu do NOT have ALL symptoms (which can include not having a high fever), and may only have a few symptoms. A common cold is usually milder, comes on gradually, and may include cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose but rarely causes fever, headache, body aches, or fatigue.
Attendance
· We know that students and parents are concerned about missing classes, tests and important assignments; however, if their absence is due to illness it will be excused and they will be able to make up their work. Please be mindful of FISD policy that students may not attend school if they have a fever (100.0 or higher) and cannot come back until they have been fever free for a full 24 hours without medication. This flu season has not only been widespread, but symptoms are also very severe. Please keep your child home when they are ill to prevent spreading these infections while at school, sporting events, and other public places. Notify attendance and/or the nurse directly if your child is absent due to the flu or flu-like symptoms in order to accurately track rates of illness and report our data to the county health department for surveillance. When reporting your child’s absence due to illness, specific symptom details are important for us to categorize our data.
· Please do not medicate your student with Tylenol or Ibuprofen if they have a temperature or are near having a fever and send them to school.
· If they are vomiting overnight or in the am please do not send them to school that morning
Prevention Measures
· The single most important thing you can do to prevent getting ill and spreading illness to others is to WASH YOUR HANDS!
· Parents should consider having their families vaccinated against the flu
· Stay home when ill, especially at onset of illness when feel the worst or with fever to avoid spreading germs and illnesses to others
· Practice coughing/sneezing etiquette to help stop the spread of germs:
§ Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
§ Put your used tissue in a waste basket
§ If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands
§ Remember to wash your hands after coughing, sneezing or using a tissue
