Kleb Intermediate Parent Newsletter--January 2017

A Note from the Principal

Welcome Back!

Can you believe it is already 2017?!? I certainly hope that you and your family had a wonderful and restful time off. I enjoyed my break, but was so excited to see all of our kids again! Now that the spring semester has started, we are ready to dive into the second semester...it always seems to fly by with the variety of events. From academic competitions to sporting events, from testing to ceremonies and celebrations, so much is happening at Kleb Intermediate. I hope that you will be a part of those events; see the rest of the newsletter for details!

Up and Coming Events

First and foremost, I hope you will join us for our spring Open House and Dinner brought to us by our fabulous PTO! It is scheduled for Tuesday, January 24th; dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:30, followed by come-and-go classroom visits from 6:45 to 8:00. More information can be found below in the PTO section.

There are a couple of items to be on the lookout for in the near future. First, at the end of January, we will begin exploring the idea of "What is a CUB?" during den. Our desire is for all of our students to be Continuous Learners and Understanding Citizens who are Building Responsibility (Hence CUBs!). We would love for you to be a part of the conversation on how we define these as a community and what it looks like in various settings, so look for the weekly talking points as we get closer! Additionally, as March approaches, be on the look-out for our STAAR Series Tutorials flyer. It will be full of dates for extra help sessions for all subjects tested to give our kids that little extra boost they might need.

Help Kleb with Old Legos!!!

Too many toys in the kids' area after Christmas? Tired of stepping on Legos in the middle of the night? Donate your old Legos to Kleb! This year we are hosting the Klein Academic Competition (KAC) on Friday, February 10th and our theme is Legos: Building Success. We need as many Legos as we can for both decorations and for the Best/Most Innovative Build contest. Additionally all donated Legos will then be used as part of the Kleb Maker Space included in the second phase of our joint project with PTO to make the Kleb library a truly 21st century learning space!

If you would like to donate Legos to the cause, simply drop them off or have your child bring them by the front office! Interested in helping decorate or help out in any other way on the day of the event? Talk to Sai Boeker, our volunteer coordinator at boeker@sbcglobal.net.

Speak up about Kleb!

In case you missed out before Christmas, the deadline for this year's Speak-Up Survey has been extended until Friday, January 13th! The Speak Up Project for Digital Learning, facilitated by Project Tomorrow®, gives education stakeholders the opportunity to share their viewpoints about key educational issues, particularly concerning digital learning and the use of technology to support future ready schools. By participating today, you are ensuring your voice is heard not only by your school and district but at the state and national level as findings are summarized and shared with national and state policy makers every year. Thank you so much for letting us know how we're doing! Visit our website or click here to take the survey!

Attention 8th Graders

Have you ever considered the IB program? You should! See the flyer below for a schedule of informational meetings...one is even hosted by us at Kleb!

A Note From the Nurse

Spinal screenings of all 8th graders will be conducted at Kleb Intermediate on January 26th, 30th and 31st during their Science class.

The State of Texas requires that all 8th grade students be screened for abnormal curves of the spine such as scoliosis and kyphosis, that can appear during years of rapid growth between the ages 10 and 16 years. The screening is a simple procedure that involves looking at the back while the child is standing and then bending forward. Boys and girls will be seen separately and individually. All students must remove their shirt for the exam. For this reason, we request that girls wear a halter top, sports bra or a two piece swimsuit underneath their shirt on screening dates. The dress code still applies. Please call the clinic (832-249-5516) if you have any questions or concerns.

More information about the contest and help session will be coming home with your students at a later date.
