Prestons Post
Term 2, Week 1
Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to school. Term 2 has started off with lots of fun and excitement and it was great to see everyone back ready for a great term of learning and fun.
Our Mysterious Visitor
We arrived to school on Wednesday to discover a mysterious visitor to our school. It seems that a lion has set up camp in our school grounds. Our students and teachers have been very curious as to why this lion would have set up camp at our school. He has some very interesting items with him, there is a huge magnifying glass which shows us that he is also curious. A big yoga ball tells us that he is very brave and determined when trying new things. There are some big bandaids which show us that he is resilient and keeps on trying even when things don't work out. We think he loves working on puzzles with his friends as there are huge puzzle pieces, a giant pencil with paper that he has been writing on in the campsite. this tells us that he is a problem solver and that he is also very collaborative. We are wondering why this lion has chosen to visit our school and can't wait to find out more next week. Stay tuned!
Cross Country
Today was a wonderful day for our cross country carnival. We had so many families come along to cheer on our students who all gave it their very best despite the very warm weather. Congratulations to all students, and to those who placed in the top we wish you well when you compete at the zone carnival. A big thank you to Year 6 who helped us to stay cool with some delicious ice cream sodas, they certainly were a big hit. What a great day, thanks to Mr Wright and all of the teachers for your organisation.
ANZAC Ceremony
Our students were very respectful during our ANZAC ceremony on Wednesday, I received some lovely compliments from the visiting officers from the Australian Defence Force. Well done to our leaders and choir for your great efforts.
Athletics Program
We are lucky to have the team from Zing Active working with us this term to deliver an athletics program. The students will have sport sessions each week with the friendly team and learn key athletics skills. Following this, Zing Active will be helping us to run our athletics carnival. I was very proud to also receive some lovely compliments about our well mannered and respectful students. Thank you to all of our students for showcasing our school so well.
SENTRAL
Don't forget to download the Sentral parent app. This is our method of communication of notes, newsletters and other key messages with families. You are also able to notify us of student absences and give permission for excursions. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SENTRAL APP REPLACES SKOOLBAG WHICH WE ARE NO LONGER USING.
Parent Forum
On Tuesday we are holding a parent forum on English K-2. If you would like to come along and learn more about how to support your child in reading and writing please join us on Tuesday. Mrs Beavis will be hosting and sharing some great ideas.
Have a wonderful break and don't forget to ask your child what they are learning at school.

Sentral Parent App
Recently our school has made the decision to change the way we communicate with parents.
Sentral, the schools School Management System has a Parent communications app. We will be using this Parent Application from the start of Term 2.
You will soon be able to do the following:
* receive real-time notifications and messages from the school or your child’s classroom teacher.
* view academic reports
* submit student absences
* view calendar events
* book parent/teacher interviews
* view school information and permission notes
* receive sick bay notifications
* view newsletters
In preparation, please download the Sentral for Parent App (via the App store or Google Play store) Search: Prestons Public School.
information on how to download the application is attached.
We require all families to register for the Sentral for Parents app as over time we plan to stop using the other communication apps such as Skoolbag and make Sentral for Parents a one stop shop for all communications.
Please be patient with the school staff as we work through any teething problems and adjust to the new system.
You should have received a paper notice and email with your child’s ‘access key’ listed on it which will allow you direct access to your child’s profile.
If you have questions about using the app, or need some extra help then please browse the list of FAQs at https://info.sentral.com.au/new-app-getting-started or contact us for assistance.
Opportunity Class Applications - Year 4 Students 2023
Opportunity classes are for primary school students who have high academic potential or who are intellectually gifted.
They provide an environment where students can learn and make friends with classmates of similar ability. This can benefit a student’s academic progress and also their wellbeing.
Opportunity classes are offered in Years 5 and 6, with parents/carers applying in Year 4.
Students who are successfully placed will usually have to leave their current school to enrol in a school with an opportunity class for Years 5 and 6.
Opportunity classes are just one of the ways that we cater for our high potential and gifted students.
Testing and assessment
Applications for opportunity class placement are considered on the results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test. Students who wish to be considered for placement are required to sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test on Thursday 27 July 2023.
How to apply
Parents/carers must apply online between Thursday 30 March and Monday 15 May 2023 at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/oc.
You must use your own email address and not one belonging to your child. Late applications are not usually accepted.
If you do not have internet access you can apply at a public library or at your child’s school. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance after 30 March 2023.

Classroom Chat with 2 Leopards
Wow! What an awesome, relaxing and well needed break we have all had! 2 Leopards have started the term with a roar, as we explore new concepts in mathematics to develop our number sense. We have been engaging with a variety of texts to become quality authors and have even published our writing with the help of our Year 5 buddies. Our reading has improved throughout the year and is sounding smoother, as we develop our fluency.
We love completing all of our learning with Miss Robinson and 2 Elephants and have become one big family that we call the Leophants. During our technology time, we have been focusing on logging on to the computers and have been learning how to touch type to improve our speed and accuracy.
We have had so much fun already this term and cannot wait to accept the challenges that await us throughout the year.
Classroom chat with 6 Eagles
6 Eagles has had a busy start to the year. We have received a new class set of whiteboard tables which we absolutely love during learning time! Students have also participated in a variety of activities for Passion Projects, PSSA on Friday and being a Buddy to our Kindergarten students.
Our classroom is looking very colourful and full of student voice. On the walls you can see samples of activities and work students have completed throughout the term for English, Maths, Art and other KLA's. We are very excited to get back in the classroom and learn this term.
