APRIL IS MATH AWARENESS MONTH!!!

We love math ALL year round, but April gives us even more opportunities to share that love!
Students at Middlebrook are engaged in math every day, manipulating numbers, learning strategies, and thinking in amazing new ways. Here are just a couple ways our students can get involved with MATH AWARENESS MONTH to apply what they’ve learned:
1. Estimation Jars each week - Encourage your children to take their best estimate as they enter the building each week. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the week to some students in K-2 and some in grades 3 - 5 who get as close as possible!
2. Math Scavenger Hunt - Let’s get our students looking out in the world for math all around! Your children can complete the scavenger hunt below by taking photos or clipping from newspapers and magazines. Return to the Math Room by the end of the month.
Here are the links if you’d like to print them from home:
Grades K - 2 Math Scavenger Hunt
How can we best support our students?! First and foremost, we must always be positive about math! “I was never good at math!” There is a large body of research that shows HOW WE THINK about math (and everything, actually) will directly impact our success in math! As parents and teachers, we are fortunate enough to help mold the thinking of our children, without sharing our own anxieties about math. Even if math wasn’t our strongest subject, it doesn’t matter! We must lead our children to have a positive attitude by avoiding these words, “I’m not good at math.” Instead, what types of positive thinking can we instill in them???
Here are just a few ideas:
I’m going to train my brain in math. This may take some time and effort.
I’ll use some of the strategies I’ve learned. I’m on the right track.
I made a mistake…Mistakes are proof that I’m trying! Mistakes help me improve!

Great News to Share
3 of our Middlebrook 2nd graders competed in the statewide Odyssey of the Mind competition that took place at Southern CT State University two weeks ago.
The kids competed in the primary division which is the entry into the competition. They worked hard throughout this school year learning and prepping for their big moment. They completed the “Dinos on Parade” problem as well as spontaneous exercises.
The kids did a fantastic job and represented Middlebrook very well.
Congratulations to our 2nd grade Odyssey of the Mind Students:

Manners at Middlebrook

Olivia Libertino in Grade 2 and Nuria O’Donald in Grade 3 were nominated by their classroom teachers this week. Mrs. Lopez stated that Nuria is always kind, helpful and a role model for peers. She could not stop exclaiming what wonderful manners she exhibits in all settings. Mrs. Mercier noted that Olivia works well with peers, is respectful to teachers and always has a positive attitude.
Congratulations to our two fabulous students!
