We Are A.R.M.Y. Strong!!

Each day, we say the Continental Creed: "As a member of the Continental Army, I promise to be Accountable, Respectful, Motivated to Learn, and do mY best." We have spent time each day learning how this is applied in each of the common areas in the building. This week we will be focusing on being Accountable and Motivated in the hallways. This includes being in class on time. This year, we added an extra minute of passing time, so students have four minutes. We also added a one-minute warning bell at three minutes. Students are expected to be in class each period on time. If they need to use the restroom or visit another teacher, they can use their agenda books to complete a hall pass. For each five tardies to class or school, students will be assigned a lunch detention up to In-School Suspension. Please discuss the importance of being to school and class on time. However, let us know if your child has specific needs that make this a challenge. We can discuss ways to support their needs.

Digital Citizenship Lessons this week

Officer Deeg and a detective from the Evansville Police Department will be in on Wednesday to talk to our boys and on Thursday to talk with our girls. They will share the importance of appropriate netbook and cell phone usage. Some parts of this discussion will include the dangers of sending inappropriate pictures/texts, chatting with strangers online, cyber bullying, etc. If you would not like your child to participate in this session, please send a signed note to the office.

Netbook Distribution Next Week

We will be distributing netbooks once students have completed the Digital Citizenship and Cyber Bullying lessons. Students in 6th grade will receive new netbook cases with their netbooks. Seventh and eighth grade students will need to bring their netbook case back to school this week. They should still have their cases from last year. If they have lost their case, used and new ones will be available for purchase. All students are required to carry their netbook in a case, so students without a case will not receive their netbook. All students will be allowed to take their netbooks home once they are signed out, have a case, and have completed their emergency forms/release forms that came home at the beginning of the year. Additional copies of those forms are available in the front office. Students will need to be sure to have their netbook charged each day and demonstrate appropriate usage in order to maintain the privilege of bringing their netbook home. Inappropriate searches, messages, or emails can be flagged by our district technology office and can result in disciplinary action. Please review EVSC's netbook usage policy with your child and ask about the lessons they learned this week. As with all technology, appropriate monitoring is encouraged. If you have concerns about your child's netbook usage, please contact Mr. Merriwether or Ms. Branson to discuss options. We are fortunate to be able to offer this learning tool to our students as a resource in preparation for digital careers, college coursework, high school requirements and upcoming online assessments.

Dress Code Reminders

Please double check the dress code before coming to school each day. Black pants and the stretchy, tight material is not part of the dress code. Our rooms are occassionally very cool, so students are permitted to wear zip up fleeces, sweatshirts (not hooded) or sweaters but they must be a solid color. If you have a need for additional dress code appropriate items, please see Mrs. Miller, our Social Worker, for a Clothing Bank request form.

PTSA Membership

Please like our Washington Middle School PTSA page on Facebook and be sure to get your membership. Student memberships include free tickets to the two after school dances, a Winter Formal dance, two donut breakfasts, and a movie night throughout the year. Students who do not have a membership will pay for each of those separately. It's much cheaper to get the membership now, and it supports our students! Forms are available in the office.
