Dear Intermediate Families:

The first quarter of school is coming to an end, and our Parent-Teacher Conferences are quickly approaching. All students in grades 4-6 will have half-days on Monday, 11/22 and Tuesday, 11/23 so that parents can have a parent-teacher conference with their child's teachers. You can schedule a conference during the following times:

• Monday, November 22 from 11:20 AM - 2:40 PM or 6:00 PM - 7:40 PM
• Tuesday, November 23 from 11:20 AM - 2:40 PM

You can schedule the conference by contacting your child's homeroom teacher through ParentSquare or email, or by calling Mrs. Blanchard in the Intermediate School Main Office at 483-5281, or Mrs. Edmonds in the Intermediate School Main Office at 483-5242.

In-Person or Virtual Conferences: It is our goal to schedule a Parent-Teacher Conference for every student to discuss his or her progress this school year. We are happy to be able to welcome parents into school for in in-person conference with your child's teacher. If you are unable to come to school in person, or prefer not to, you may schedule a virtual video conference with your child's teacher, or even a phone conference.

iReady and Report Card Data Available For Discussion: Last week all families should have received their child's iReady reading and math diagnostic scores. The first quarter of school ends on Friday, November 12 and report cards should be sent home with students by Friday, November 19. The Parent-Teacher Conferences on November 22 - 23 will be an ideal time to review the information in your child's report card and iReady diagnostics. We look forward to these discussions as we partner with families to support the intellectual, social, and emotional growth of our students.

Early Dismissal on November 22 and November 23: All Intermediate students will be dismissed at 10:35 AM on Monday, November 22 and Tuesday, November 23. Students will be provided with a bagged lunch both days as they dismiss.

Consistent health care and dental care have been a challenge during the pandemic. We are excited that Mosaic Health Community Dentistry will again be coming into school to do free dental screenings in our Intermediate School Health Office. In order for students to receive this free screening, parents must return a signed registration form to the school. These were already sent home for all students. If you do not have a registration form at home and would like another sent home, please contact the Intermediate School Main Office at 483-5281 and we will send another registration home with your child. Registration forms are available in Spanish as well as English.

Below is some additional information about Mosaic Health Community Dentistry.

The primary focus of the school-based program is to provide quality, affordable, and accessible dental services to the underserved and uninsured children, especially those in rural non-fluoridated communities who might not otherwise receive care.

Community Dentistry provides free dental screenings and dental health and nutrition education to students in nearly 200 schools and Head Starts across the Finger Lakes region, as well as a toothbrush, floss, and homecare instructions at no cost to the family. Parents/Guardians of children enrolled at participating schools may also sign up their child/children for preventive dental services that include X-rays, teeth cleaning, fluoride varnish treatment, and/or dental sealants.

What’s more, Mosaic Health provides Community Dentistry participants with Care Navigation, assisting patients and families in search of a dental home, and facilitating insurance enrollment and/or sliding fee scale application.

Community Dentistry has been caring for children since 1995 and currently provides school-based dental services at sites in Allegany, Chemung, Herkimer, Livingston, Oneida, Ontario, Schuyler, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates Counties.

We encourage you to explore the clubs and afterschool activities we offer our Intermediate Spartans by reading the descriptions in this handbook. Each description also includes the meeting pattern and staff member(s) along with their contact information. SEL TIP #6 - A quick reminder for all ages this week as I have been talking with colleagues and teams about the range of emotions some are feeling each week, day, hour, minute...Emotions are signals to us. Name the feeling you are having and then decide what next steps are needed.

2021 Intermediate School Patriotism Week Video:

Our Intermediate School students will be participating in Patriotism Week from November 8-12 this year. This annual week-long celebration is sponsored by our Intermediate School Improvement Team. In years past we have ended the week with an assembly during which we recognize family members of our students and staff members who are veterans or who are currently serving in a branch of the Armed Forces. Unfortunately we will not be able to hold our in-person assembly due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, we would still like to honor these family members by recognizing them in a video that can be shared with our school community.

If your child has a family member who is a veteran or who is currently serving in the Armed Forces, we would like to include him or her in this video recognition. Students are welcome to create their own slide to put in our slideshow celebrating their family member’s service, or supply us with the information below and we can create a slide for you if you email me at ehoskins@soduscsd.org with the following information:

• Your child’s name

• Name of the veteran or active duty service member

• His or her relationship to your child

• Military Branch the he or she served in (or is currently serving in)

• If possible, please include a picture for our presentation along with the email

We will have more information about our Patriotism Week celebration as we get closer to November 8.
