Math, Science, and Social Studies
We will continue working on our 6 facts in math fluency this week. This is where students begin to have more difficulty so please make sure they are working on these facts at home. Continue to work with your child on their math facts each night. The fact cards are in your child's pencil pouch. Also, continue to work on all previous facts: 1's through 5's and 10's. We will have our accuracy check on the 6 facts this Friday.
Science-We are back to SCIENCE!! Students are super excited for all the fun learning opportunities coming up in Science this 9 weeks. We will start our week designing and constructing a pumpkin catapult. Students will research their design and complete a materials list of supplies needed. They will construct and test their catapult. Students will have the opportunity to redesign if needed. Our catapults will be used next week to compete in the Pumpkin Catapults Olympics. We will end our week with a ballooning spider parachute contest.
Reading, Writing, and Word Study
Reading--Our focus this week is on theme and main idea. For the first part of the week we will work on determining the specific main idea for a text or a set of items. We will work in groups and pairs to determine main idea. The second part of the week we will switch our focus to theme and we will look at non-specific theme statements. We will have several hands-on activities this week to help make these concepts stick! Be sure to ask your students about "main idea bags", "candy corn sorts", and "the creme is in the middle" cupcake activity! Reminder--all students are expected to have a "grade appropriate" book to read in class every day. (This means a chapter book or a longer non-fiction selection--not Where's Waldo or a joke book). We do classroom library check in and out each Tuesday and Friday, and each class has a weekly trip to the school library.
Writing--We will be looking at our ACT aspire writing from last week and doing some self reflection/self grading using a rubric. In addition, we will write daily in our Writer's Notebooks to keep our creative juices flowing!
