On Monday, December 9th, we transformed our cafeteria into the Cheetah Café—an upscale establishment complete with tablecloths, snowflake decorations, instrumental music, and even a Maître D’! Our serving staff sprinkled in the magic and our students got fancy for this special occasion. News from the Music Room
Hello Memorial Families! It has been an exciting month of learning in the music room. Check your student’s grade level below to find out what we have been up to!
Preschool: Students practiced being an echo again by trying to repeat after the teacher with a singing voice. To practice this skill, we sang “My Aunt Came Back” and tried to do all the silly movements at once! They also sang some songs about turkeys using turkey finger puppets or body movements. Students enjoyed reading a story called “There Was a Man and He Was Mad”. Check the music room website for song lyrics.
Kindergarten: Students have made great progress making a “perfect match” when singing after the teacher! They began to explore the musical opposites loud and soft, while experiencing movement and singing. Favorite songs included “Just From the Kitchen”, “Charlie Over the Ocean” and “Snail Snail”. They also enjoyed exploring the sounds that rhythm instruments make. They tried lollipop drums, guiros, triangles, sticks, sand blocks, and more!
First Grade: Students continued to practice making a “perfect match” when singing and. They also learned the names of two rhythms: quarter note (“Ta”) and eighth notes (“Ti Ti”). They have practiced reading and writing these new rhythms on worksheets, during games such as “Post Office”, and at music centers. Some classes also used imagination to create rhythm turkeys to show that they can create four-beat ta and ti-ti patterns! (See the picture below!) Now, they are working to solve the mystery of a new rhythm that makes no sound at all! This month, we learned the song “Pease Porridge Hot” to explore this new mystery rhythm!
Second Grade: This month, students focused on their new two-beat rhythm, the half note. They practiced reading and writing this rhythm throughout the month. They even played games like Rhythm Football and Post Office to get extra practice. They used confidence and teamwork to do mystery song challenges! In addition, students used imagination to create their own story to accompany “In the Hall of the Mountain King”, which we listened to last month. Next month, we will continue to work on creativity through music improvisation with rhythms.
Third Grade: Third graders had a very exciting month in the music room as they prepared to receive their recorders! They spent one class period using wonder to ask and answer questions about recorder. They also practiced reading rhythms and notes to prepare to read their recorder music. Finally, all third grade classes began the recorder unit. If you haven’t already, be sure to look at the Recorder Handbook that was sent home in your child’s recorder folder! The Recorder Karate page on the music website also has helpful resources! Students should be practicing at least four days per week for ten minutes. There are songs to work on inside the recorder folders too!
Please check out the music room website for more information about the music program. Feel free to reach out at any time by emailing smaldonado@easthamptonct.org.

News from the Library Media Center
Hi Cheetah families!
It has been another busy month in the Memorial School library. Thank you for all your support with the book fair!
· PreK students are enjoying a variety of read alouds and songs with the themes of thankfulness, kindness, and winter. We have also practiced some fun rhymes and songs.
· Kindergarten has continued to work on logging into the Chromebooks. We also have gone over the rolls of the author and the illustrator. During the month of December we are learning all about caribou and practicing sorting facts verses opinions.
· First grade has finished their unit on digital citizenship. We have watched several short videos by Planet Nutshell and reinforced the message that we need adult supervision when using the internet. In early December, we are practicing using our school database, PebbleGo to do some research on caribou.
· Second grade is continuing their unit on digital citizenship. We will be working through library centers this month to reinforce what we have learned so far. Centers will include: practicing with the keyboard; learning about the Cyber5 rules for internet safety; or participating in an online behavior sort.
· Third graders have finished the work started in the fall using the Common Sense Media digital citizenship lessons in the website, Nearpod. In early December, we will be discussing how to organize our Google Drives and reviewing how to use the library catalog.
