PD Day on Feb 15
Greetings SVUSD,
We are pleased to welcome you to our third professional learning day for the 2018-19 school year. Using feedback from the professional development survey you completed in September, November and following the January 30 professional learning day, we have crafted a catalog of sessions for your participation and engagement.
We are continuing the format of full day sessions and repeating 100 minute sessions. Full day sessions should be attended all day. The 100 minute sessions are structured so that you can participate in a variety of session of interest.
The Professional Learning Catalog provides session descriptions, intended audience, and the locations of each session. New sessions are marked with an asterisk. Sessions CPM Math and NGSS Science are secondary sessions that are continuing on from November 2, January 30 and February 15. Most of our sessions have a maximum capacity of 30 participants so if a session is full when you arrive, please find another session. A map of SVHS is also included for your reference.
This is a reminder that February 15th is a classified holiday. If any classified would like to participate in another three sessions day, you may do so on a time sheet as Overtime (OT). Remember, to sign in and out with your site administrator on February 15 if you decide to attend and complete a time sheet and turn into your supervisor before February 22.
If your room is being used to host sessions, please leave a note for the presenter if there are any specifics as to how you would like your room left. All room assignments are on the agenda.
Pastries and coffee will be provided in the morning and lunch will be on your own.
Please note that many sessions will repeat across all three days so that participants who are unable to attend sessions of interest in November can attend in January and February. We hope that these offerings support you in continuing your outstanding work and helps us all to reach and teach each and every student in our district.
Sincerely,
Your Educational Services Team

Rainy Day Lunch
We will no longer be using the rainy day schedule. It simply causes too much confusion for Noon Duty and staff.
Please follow the regular schedule everyday. If it is raining you will pick up the students after your 30 minute lunch. If it isn’t raining they will go outside.
The one major adjustment will be that is it is raining or the potential for rain - K and first will eat together.
Hope this makes sense?
Our School Community
And when I think "oh dear how are we going to get out of this one?"... All of you step up and make it happen! Thank you for taking responsibility and leadership in making sure all our students were taken care of this week!!
Parents also make me hopeful! This week I got to interact with parents at kinder registration, Valentines Day Dance and a listening circle. We have amazing parents at our school who will do whatever they can to help their children and our school!
Thank you all! EV is a great place to be!

Mindfulness & You
This Project will address the continued adversity, loss, and trauma that have taken a devastating toll on many Latino families and children in the wake of the October 2017 wildfires. Many Latinos who were living on the edge before the fires are struggling to recover from the emotional, financial, and physical impacts of the disaster and are not able to locate and access culturally appropriate wellness supports. Unfortunately, disparities in mental health care for Latinos are severe, persistent, and well documented. Latinos in Napa and Sonoma Counties have less access to mental health services than do Whites, are less likely to receive needed care, and are more likely to receive poor quality care when treated.(Community-Defined Solutions for Latino Mental Health Care. UC Davis, 2012)
Now that the wildfires have faded from the headlines and attention has turned elsewhere, too many people are feeling left alone to deal with the “second disaster” of continued adversity, loss, conflict and further trauma.
The Thriving Schools Wellness Initiative in Napa and Sonoma Valley will create cultures of wellness at high need elementary schools by supporting school staff to implement self-care, peer-to-peer support and classroom wellness activities for students and by offering parent education, family wellness events and support activities to help Latino parents manage stress and promote children’s well-being. On The Move brings together community leaders and partner organizations to create a Tapestry of Wellness that involves a collection of “strands” that create multiple culturally based paths to wellness:
● Art Expression: Art, dance, music, theater and writing allow for articulation of feelings.
● Healthy Living: Gardening, exercise, healthy cooking and eating together enhance the mind and body experience.
● Spiritual Healing: Meditation and other spiritual practices quiet the mind, body and soul.
● Social Connections: Conversation groups, parent cafes and celebrations nurture needed relationships.
Today, more than ever, mental health support is critical to keeping our communities safe and well. As a community, we must find solutions for providing low-cost, effective, resilience-focused mental health services that meet the unique cultural needs of our Latino children, youth, and families.
