Have you ever noticed that someone needs help – but maybe been too shy or scared to go over and lend them a hand?
This week as I was driving I noticed a car that had broken down on the side of the road. As I got a little closer I watched as another car pulled up to help the man standing there next to it – and it made me think. I started to wonder whether they knew this man – maybe he’d even called them for help – or whether they just saw that he needed a hand and decided to act? It made me wonder whether I would have done the same. He was a stranger, after all, and it was getting kind of dark. It was a choice I didn’t even have to make – but it sure made me think.
In this week’s Gospel story, Jesus visits the home of Simon and Andrew. When he got there he learned that Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever. Jesus goes right to her – this woman he’s never even met – and helps to make her well.
If we went over to a friend’s house and learned that someone was sick we stay away to keep ourselves from getting sick. But not Jesus. He went straight in and helped her – just like the people I watched in the car.
Sometimes it takes bravery – to do the right thing, doesn’t it? But Jesus never shied away from doing the right thing when he was needed. That doesn’t mean that we should take dangerous chances where they don’t seem like a good idea – but there are lots of ways to help. Even if I’d decided not to get out of the car myself, I could have made a phone call, right? Maybe let the police know that there was a man whose car had broken down? That would have been helpful and safe.
This week let's remind ourselves that we should never be afraid to do the right thing and keep an eye out for people in need this week? Your help could mean a lot to them.

Shrove Tuesday
Shrove Tuesday is the day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. It is the day when we are encouraged to go to confession in preparation for the penitential season ending Easter Sunday. Lent is a time of abstinence. Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent.
In the old days there were many foods that observant Christians would not eat during Lent: foods such as meat and fish, fats, eggs, and milky foods. So that no food was wasted, families would have a feast on the shriving Tuesday, and eat up all the foods that wouldn't last the forty days of Lent.
The need to eat up the fats gave rise to the French name Mardi Gras; meaning fat Tuesday. Pancakes became associated with Shrove Tuesday as they were a dish that could use up all the eggs, fats and milk in the house with just the addition of flour.
This year, Shrove Tuesday lunch will be catered to the students by McDonald's. To ensure that we are adhering to Alberta Health Guidelines the following items will be individually packaged.
Kindergarten to Grade 4: 3 pancakes, milk, and apple slices
Grade 5 - 8: 3 pancakes, sausage, milk, and apple slices.
Pancakes will be served at lunch tims. Students that require more lunch then the above order will need to bring additional items on this day. To assist with the ordering please complete the following form for each child no later than February 9th. FORM FOR PANCAKES
