RBHS BRIDGE Communication
Rock Bridge High School Newsletter September 2, 2020
Rock Bridge Families,
Materials Return
We are in the process of collecting all the materials from last school year. If you have items (books, extra laptops, calculators, etc.) still in your possession from last school year, please plan to deliver them to the school so we can issue them to the proper students this year. To return items, you may bring them to the North Commons September 2, 3, or 4 between 12:30 and 3:30. All you will need to do is simply place them in a bin. If you are unable to make it to the school for one of these times, we will continue accepting items the following week. You will just need to bring the items to the Main Entrance of Rock Bridge and we will have return receptacles located just inside our Main Entrance doors.
Materials Checkout
We are currently working to develop a schedule for families to check out materials required for specific courses. We will communicate this schedule as soon as we are able. More information about this will be sent out through our InfoBruin. If you are not signed up yet to receive the InfoBruin, you can check the August 30th BRIDGE (linked below) for instructions.
Laptops
As we've communicated many times, your school issued laptop will be critical for accessing your education this school year. All 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students need to log into their laptops to make sure they are functioning properly. If they are not, please bring them to the North Commons September 2, 3, or 4 between 12:30 and 3:30 to exchange them for a functioning computer. You will need to remove any saved items from your laptop's desktop, My Documents, or My Downloads that you wish to keep. To do this, you can save these items to a flash drive or to your Google Drive. If you are returning a malfunctioning laptop, please attach a note to it describing what is wrong with it.
If you need to exchange your current computer and these dates and times do not work with your schedule, you can go to the front entrance of any of our middle schools next Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday between 7:30 and 4:00 to get tech support. This will most likely include exchanging your device. Finally, additional support will be at the front entrance of Aslin Administration Building from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday next week.
If you are a 9th grader or student new to RBHS who has not already picked up your laptop, you should plan to come to the North Entrance September 2, 3, or 4 to pick up your device.
Online School Explained
We wanted to take a moment and explain exactly how online instruction will work. Rock Bridge students should expect to begin their school day Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 8:55 and synchronously work their way through each day's classes. All classes will have online lessons in Schoology five days a week. Remember that we are operating in our 4x4 model so students will be expected to check into each class every day of the week.
On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday each week, students will follow their schedule as if they were in the building.
- 8:55: Log into 1st block Schoology course and begin the lesson for that class. The teacher may or may not be providing direct instruction via zoom that day. There might be a guided, self-paced activity for the student to complete. The teacher will be available during the entire assigned class time to assist and provide instruction when appropriate or as needed. More information on how to contact the teacher will be in their Schoology page. We know students learn differently and at different rates so your student may or may not need all 90 minutes to complete the lesson for that day.
- At the end of first block, students will move on to their 2nd block class through Schoology. This pattern will repeat itself for the duration of the day. See the RB bell schedule linked below.
- Pay careful attention to meeting times during 2nd block as communicated by the teacher. Students will still have time for lunch during on-line instuction. Check your student schedule to determine which lunch you have. If you are unable to determine when you eat lunch, check your 2nd period course in Schoology to determine which lunch you have.
- Student schedules should be available in the family portal by the end of this week.
What will happen on Wednesdays?
On Wednesdays, students will be expected to check Schoology for each course, but will not work directly with teachers to complete assigned tasks. A student will be able to move through course content in their desired order and pace. Teaches will be available to students for office hours during the last half of the day. Exact teacher office hours will be communicated later.
What about the materials my student needs for their class?
We will be organizing a materials pickup for students next week once we have gotten schedules out to students.
Will students still be split into two groups?
The main purpose of splitting students into groups was to reduce the number of students who were physically in the classroom. This is not needed in a virtual setting. Students should check into their classes every day as if they were in a normal five day a week in-seat schedule.
Portrait of an Online Learner
Online activities may include:
Instruction through Zoom (whole group, small group and one on one) is to ensure that all families have consistent, equal access to the most essential part of school, therefore, Zoom sessions may be recorded and made available to your student in the event they were unable to participate in the live session.
Group activities through Zoom, Schoology, and email
Flipped lessons/labs using video lessons and screencasts.
Short formative assessments through Schoology and/or email
Threaded discussions through Schoology and email
Online labs, scenarios, demonstrations
Hands-on, place-based activities that can be completed at home when applicable
Independent reading, writing, research, exercise, and projects
