FIELD PARK UPDATES:
Trimester 2 Reporting - "Refresh" #2
What are the D101 Levels of Understanding Again?
SBR Refresh Update #2 February 28, 2020
Letter grades and percentages are no longer being used to report student achievement. Rather, because learning is the focus in a standards-based system, teachers now communicate academic progress using Levels of Understanding:
1 - Beginning. Student does not yet demonstrate understanding of the grade level standard; continued instruction and support is required. (Explanatory metaphor: child riding a tricycle.)
2 - Progressing. Student demonstrates progress toward understanding the grade level standard; support and guidance are often needed. (Explanatory metaphor: child riding a bike with training wheels.)
3 - Secure. Student consistently demonstrates understanding of the grade level standard at an independent level. Secure is where we want students to be; in a traditional system, Secure is the A! (Explanatory metaphor: child independently riding a bike.)
4 - Extending. Student consistently demonstrates application and in-depth understanding that extends beyond the grade level standard. (Explanatory metaphor: child performing tricks on the bicycle.) (This category may not apply to some areas; some Learning Targets are not extendable or may not merit extension.)
Another metaphor that may be helpful in explaining the Levels of Understanding is that of a basketball player. Using this line of thought, a Level 3 could be synonymous with a professional-level player, while a Level 4 could be synonymous with a Michael Jordan-level player. Both levels describe extremely successful, secure understandings of expected learning, but Level 4 describes the rare few.
Our students are fluent in the use of Levels of Understanding to gauge their progress and determine next steps. Don’t hesitate to talk with your children about how they use Levels of Understanding to guide their learning!
