Animals Sent Into Space

By Luke Z.

Animals that have been sent into Space.

There have been a lot of animals that have been sent into space. Some only think that monkeys have been sent into space. But there have been over 10 different species of animals sent into space. These are: flies, (which were the first in space), plants, (which are not animals), monkeys, dogs, mice, fish, tadpoles, rabbits, tortoises, meal-worms, insects, spiders, jellyfish, cats, and rats. Sheep too.

History of Primates Going into Space

There have been a lot of monkeys that have tried to go into space. But not all of them made the trip. Albert, the Macaque monkey died of suffocation because there was a mechanical failure. This was before peak altitude, so he never even got into space. Albert the 2nd, made it to space, but died because the parachute failed to work. Albert the 3rd, died because the rocket exploded. Albert the 4th, died on impact, when landing. Yorick was then, sent up into space with some mice. He made it back down safely, but died of heat exposure several hours later. Patricia, Mike, and some mice were sent into space, and survived. Later on, Able and baker, were sent into space on life support, which was hard to fit into the rocket. Able died of anesthesia, but Baker survived until the age of 27 when he died of kidney failure. Sam and Miss Sam were later on sent into space, but Miss Sam, had a spasmodic, which is when the eyes roll back. Ham the Chimpanzee was also sent into space. There was a mechanical malfunction and the rocket was sent farther into space. He was also sent farther down range. He experienced 6.6 minutes of weightlessness.

Dogs in Space

Laika is the first dog sent into space in 1957. But Laika died of heat exposure several hours after landing. This got Americans going on sending things into space. Veterok and Ugolyok orbited in space for 22 days. This is a record that is still standing. Often, stray dogs were sent into space.

Cats in Space

Some cats have been known to have been sent into space. Felicette, the first space cat, was sent into space without dying. Felicette, was sent into space by the French in 1963. A year earlier, France sent a rat into space named Hector.
