Parent Camp Explained
So, what’s so exciting about Parent Camp?
Learning, is what we are all about. We sometimes get distracted by other things like grades, accountability to New York State, getting into college, but this is school, and learning needs to be at the center of everything we do! Learning, is inherently exciting. It’s the reason we exist, to learn new skills, to grow and get better.
Learning happens best when…
- What we’re learning is relevant to us
We have a choice over what, how, and when we learn
We participate in our own learning, we don’t just sit back and have somebody tell us stuff
We connect with other people who have similar concerns, passions, needs and interests.
Parent Camp is ALL of these things! We have done EdCamp style learning with kids. Take a look at this video that shows six graders putting up ideas on the session board for their EdCamp learning.
Parent camp is going to be a Game-Changing event; parents are assured of having their needs met as learners because they are going to drive the conversations that take place.
I realize that if you’ve never participated in EdCamp then you might be sitting back and thinking, what's all the fuss about. That’s the way I felt before my wife (@dmgately, the assistant superintendent in East Williston) and I went to our first EdCamp, EdCamp New York City. We had heard a lot about this model of learning and we wanted to see what it was like. We came back so excited that we put together a team to create EdCamp Long Island which in only its sixth year had over 1000 participants.
So, I really hope you’ll join us next Tuesday, October 29 at 7 PM for Jericho PTA Parent University\Parent Camp.
