From the desk of our Proud Principal

This year we've decided to update our Student of the Month Awards. We wanted to tie in our monthly core essentials curriculum with our student of the month program. We will be spotlighting one student per classroom that has displayed the core essentials trait. For September the trait we’ve discussed is INITIATIVE. Classrooms read a Dr. Seuss book that portrays the month’s trait and then teachers chose one student from their class that demonstrated that trait. Below is a list of the monthly traits along with a link to a reading of the Dr. Seuss book that correlates.

September: Initiative Horton Hatches The Egg

October: Individuality Happy Birthday to You

November: Service Thidwick The Kindhearted Moose

December: Compassion How the Grinch Stole Christmas

January: Self Control My Many Colored Days

February: Cooperation The Cat in the Hat

March: Hope The Lorax

Apil: Friendship Horton Hears a Who

May: Contentment Yertle The Turtle

Student of the Month lists are available on our website.

Great Job, Summer Readers!

Congratulations to the over 200 Bunker Hill students that participated in this summer's Beatz & Bookz Summer Reading Program presented by the Indianapolis Public Library. During the program children and parents borrowed over 1,000,000 books from our many library locations.

We appreciate the community providing such a great opportunity to strengthen the reading skills of our students.

Summer Reading Participants

Each month we will send out a newsletter with important information, dates, and reminders. This newsletter will be sent electronically to the email we have on file for each student. If you requested a paper copy, the newsletter will come home with your student. The newsletter will also be available on our website http://www.ftcsc.k12.in.us/bunker-hill or our Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bunker-Hill-Elementary-School/172442352820782

Remind is another great way to stay connected to Bunker Hill. You just text the number 81010 and enter message @bhbulldogs and press send. We will send out messages/reminders and you will simply receive then as a text message. We have no access to cell phone numbers nor does anyone else in this group. You can not reply to the message as no one will receive them.

Friendly Reminders

  • We do our best to keep classroom disruptions to a minimum. If your child forgets an item and you bring it in, please do not be offended if the front office asks for you to leave the item with them so it can be delivered at an appropriate time.
  • If there is a change in transportation for students at the end of the day, we must be notified by a Parent/Guardian before 3:00pm.
  • If electronics (cell phones, ipods, gaming systems) are brought into school and removed from backpacks, they will be confiscated by the teacher. A parent/guardian will be asked to pick up the electronic at the front desk.
  • When having lunch with your student in the cafeteria please remember to only have your child sit with you at the family table. We like to keep the table open for other families. Please No Fast Food!
  • When visiting your child for lunch, please go directly to the cafeteria and exit the building when lunch is finished. We are no longer allowing parents to go to recess with the class. We appreciate your cooperation in helping limit our classroom distractions.

Clinic Reminders

  • The flu season is upon us. Please remind your child to practice good hand washing skills. Students also need to practice coughing and sneezing into their elbow.
  • Vision Screenings- First grade vision screenings will be Oct. 28th at Kitley. If you choose to not have your child screened at school, please send in a written note stating your request. If you have questions please contact Mrs. Knox at 860-3448
  • The clinic is in need of clothing and underwear for boys. Sizes most needed are 5 and 6.
  • If your child is vomiting, experiencing diarrhea, or has a fever they must be free of these symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school.
  • Please return any medical paperwork as soon as possible.
  • All medications must be brought in by parent or guardian to school.

Library News

Students are now checking out books from the library. Enjoy spending time asking them about their book or reading it with them.

Please help your student remember that books are due the day before their library day. This allows time for books to get checked in.

A Message From Mrs. Staton

  • Check out (LIKE ) my Facebook page at Bunker Hill Physical Education. Soon, I will be posting pictures of roller skating in PE (grades 3-5) and the 4th grade P.E. field trip to the National Institute of Fitness and Sport.
  • Students learned September is National 5-A-Day Month. Is every family member eating five servings of fruits and vegetables each day?

5-A-Day, the healthy way!” Great for getting our daily vitamins and fiber!

  • In October, students will learn they need 3 servings of dairy foods each day. Why---for strong bones! “3-A-Day, the calcium way!
  • Third grade students are looking forward to their upcoming Related Arts field trip on October 9th. We will travel to The Gymnastics Company, the Rhythm Discovery Center, and the Eiteljorg Museum for a unique P.E-Music-Art educational experience.
