Valentine's Day Reminder
Valentine’s Day is on Thursday, Feb. 14th, 2019. This day is not a class party day, but teachers will be celebrating in their rooms with students. Your child’s teacher will send home any plans they have for their classroom. The school will not be taking any deliveries for students. These types of gifts include balloons, flowers, stuffed animals, candy, etc. These are all fun things to share with your child at home but become a disruption to our learning environment. In addition, these types of items are not allowed on the bus and could pose safety concerns.
Please celebrate Valentine’s Day at home with your children, as we will allow the classes time to celebrate here with each other. Thank you for your understanding.

Morning Drop Off Reminders
Students cannot walk across the parking lot by themselves. Please help us keep them safe by walking with them to the main door in the morning.
As a friendly reminder, the instructional day at La Vernia Intermediate runs from 7:40 a.m - 3:10 p.m. Students may be dropped off as early as 7:00 a.m. in the car rider drop off line. For safety reasons, please do not drop your child off in front of the school. If arriving after 7:35 a.m., please plan to walk your child into the office to follow check-in procedures.Car Rider Drop off lines close at 7:35 to allow students time to get to class. We do keep the car rider line open until 7:40 on days of inclement weather. But, there are pretty days in the forecast for this week. Thank you!
A Note from Mrs. Garza
Our brains are amazing muscles. I confess, if I had more time, I would spend some of it reading about how our brains are designed. One of my favorite speakers actually has a series of books called, Worksheets Don’t Grow Dendrites. This weekend, I was able to hear a speaker discuss the profound impact a complement can have on our brain development and how we view ourselves. Think about it. What is your first response when someone gives you a compliment? Do you think about it later in the day? Is it what you go to bed thinking about? Now, think about this. What is your first reaction when someone corrects you, says something negative, or yells at you? When do you think about that? Do you think about that when you go to bed at night? See, those two scenarios have the ability to shape our brains, and they have even more ability to shape our children’s brains. Some research says a comment that could invoke shame can be processed in 3 seconds, while one that can invoke confidence needs 30 seconds to be processed.
I encourage you to complement your children, and make them think about it for 30 seconds free of distractions. Remind them of the complement five minutes later, and then when they go to bed. I think you will see a profound change in their behavior and positively impact their brain’s neurons.

Texas School Report Cards
The 2017-2018 School Report Cards (SRC) were posted publicly on Friday, January 25, 2019, on the TEA website.
Each campus is responsible for sharing the SRC with parents or guardians within six (6) weeks of its release. A copy of the school report card will go home with students the week of February 4th.
