Deer Hill School News . December 9, 2022
Dear Deer Hill Families,
Today is a busy day for communication between school and home. In addition to this newsletter, progress reports have been published in Aspen. To access your child's progress report, please log in to your family portal. This is our second year with this newly formatted progress report. As I’ve shared in the past, standards-based progress reports are formative assessments. As opposed to report cards, they represent a “moment in time” of student performance in relation to expectations for the current term. Teachers will continue to address concepts that may not have been mastered yet. The Deer Hill staff takes great pride in the accomplishments of our students. Our hope is that you will celebrate your child’s effort and growth while setting attainable goals for the remainder of the school year.
All the best,
Alexandra L. Sullivan
Principal, Deer Hill School
P.S. Our next newsletter will be published December 23, 2022.

Need to Knows
On Friday December 16th we will have a Celtics spirit day where students can wear green or their favorite Celtics swag. Why? Because our OWN Ms. Flynn, grade 4 SPED teacher, will be singing the National Anthem at the Celtics game that night. Additionally, we will have a brief Friday Flag morning assembly in the gym where Ms. Flynn will sing for US!
On December 23 we will also have our annual Festive Sweater Day. Students are encouraged to make something festive if they don't have something in their closet. No need to add to your shopping list! Please note that December 23 is a half day with a 1:15 dismissal.
Save the Date! Deer Hill's circus in residence program is returning after a two year hiatus with a new circus partner, Circus Smirkus! All students will enjoy sessions with the circus trainers during the week of March 6-10 with 5th graders offering an evening performance on March 10. More details will follow as we near the return of this beloved Deer Hill tradition
Keeping the Joy (happenings at Deer Hill)
- Nothing kicks of the holidays better than a visit from the Cohasset High School music department! Deer Hill students were treated to a performance today that put everyone in a festive mood. Third graders also enjoyed having some high school company on the playground during recess!
- Best of luck to the Deer Hill FLL robotics team! They will be competing at WPI in Worcester tomorrow.
- Many thanks to Chris Kennedy and Kennedy Country Gardens for providing plants at cost and donating labor to beautify our new entryway security planter. We greatly value their ongoing support of Deer Hill! Thank you also to the Gibson family for sprucing up our front planters. Lastly, Dee Riley and Abby Greco filled our courtyard planters with greens as well. Even as temperatures dip, our courtyard continues to get regular use by classes.
- It's always nice to have extra help at Deer Hill! Thanks to two awesome auction items from the CEF fundraiser earlier this fall, Mr. Youmans had help from Coach Deck Quinn last month, and on Monday Principal Abby Bryan took a break from 4th grade to share in my duties. Many thanks to the CEF and these two future leaders!
- Prior to Thanksgiving break, Mrs. Johnston's and Ms. Schneider's grade 5 classes partnered with Ms. Carabba's and Mrs. McPhillip's grade 1 classes for a festive writing project. First graders "disguised" turkeys and provided story elements that their fifth grade partners then crafted into engaging stories. The highlight was an opportunity for first graders to "turkey trot"over to Deer Hill to read their co-authored stories together!
