NEWS AND INFORMATION @ ALTA VISTA
On January 22nd, Alta Vista will host an orientation meeting for parents and guardians of incoming kindergarteners. It will be an opportunity for them to meet the staff, learn about the registration process, and find about kindergarten curriculum. The meeting will be held in the Alta Vista cafeteria and begins at 6:00 PM. Please share information about this "adults only" meeting with any friends or neighbors with kindergarteners joining us for the 2020-2021 school year.
DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP SAFETY REMINDER
Please remember that left turns into the main parking lot are not allowed at drop-off and pick-up times. Although it may require an additional lap around the neighborhood, please keep in mind that our goal is keep our students and their families safe during this busy time. Thank you for your support and cooperation.
COUGAR PRIDE TRAIT - KINDNESS
During the month of January, our Cougar Pride trait is kindness. Today students heard about the importance of putting words into action when spreading kindness. They were encouraged to look for a way to make the day a little nicer for someone at school or in the community.
If you'd like to extend the conversation at home, below you'll find a list of 50 Acts of Kindness. You'll find a mix of positive actions for home and school. You could even think of it as a Family Kindness Challenge. Lastly, I've included a list of books that would be a wonderful way to end the day with a little kindness. Enjoy!
CORNERSTONE CORNER
During January, our Cornerstone volunteers will be sharing the book "Today I Feel Silly and Other Moods that Make My Day" in classrooms. The follow up conversations will focus on the wide range of emotions that we all feel in our lives and how to work through things such as disappointment and sadness. For more information, please refer to the flyer at the bottom of this newsletter.
OPEN ENROLLMENT IN UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT
The Union School District Board of Trustees endorses a neighborhood school concept. The Board, however, recognizes that parents may wish to choose a school of attendance other than the assigned school. Therefore, the Board of Trustees believes that parental choice among the district’s public schools should be included as an integral feature of a well-rounded educational environment. At the bottom of the newsletter, you will find a flyer with more information about both intra and inter district transfers, including details about the applicable deadlines.
SMART RESTART @ ALTA VISTA
On Monday, we kicked off the new year with our Smart Restart activities. Across the campus, students spent the day involved in activities were focused on community building, social-emotional learning, technology, and the arts. Classrooms were bustling with bridge building design challenges, friendship bracelets, minecraft exploration, line dancing, yarn art, and mindfulness exercises. Our fifth graders even worked with Mrs. Carlen to make thirty blankets to donate to Project Linus, providing comfort to children in need.
Below are just a few pictures to give you a glimpse into our marvelous Monday.
