40 Book Challenge
One of our goals for the third grade boys and girls is to instill of a love of reading. In order to help accomplish this goal, we are challenging the boys and girls to read at least 40 books during the school year. This challenge is not optional. It is a required part of your child’s daily third grade homework.
We have asked the boys and girls to track their progress on a yellow reading log card will be in child’s blue folder as of today. Your child should keep his/her card in the folder because we periodically refer to it in class and reflect on our progress.
Please encourage your child to read daily and periodically check in on his/her progress. You are not required to sign the log until your child finishes this challenge.
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:
- We recommend the majority of the books be on your child’s independent reading level. If you need more direction with books that are on the correct level, we are happy to help during our parent/teacher conference in October. We talked with the children about choosing books that are “just right” for them.
- We made a note on the card regarding the genres that we allow students to read picture books or chapter books.
- In most cases, we ask the boys and girls to read chapter books that are on a “just right” level.
- You may use books from the school library, the public library (PARR library), or your own book collection.
- Your child may read alone, with you, or a combination of both.
- Books that are more than 300 pages can count twice.
- If your child is reading books from the Bluebonnet Award List, those books will count here too.
- Books that are used for classroom assignments will not count toward the 40 Book Challenge. However, during independent reading time in class your child may continue to read his/her current book and that will count.
- We will check in with the boys and girls from time to time to see how they are doing with this homework assignment. We will also spend time discussing books and recommending books to each other. We will also send home some additional book suggestions in newsletters.
- Your child may count any books he/she has read since the beginning of this school year only. Please do not count books read prior to third grade or during the summer unless your child rereads the book.
- We will celebrate the students’ accomplishments at the end of the year.
The boys and girls were so excited about this challenge when we talked about it today.
Thank you for supporting this assignment. We are looking forward to a great year of reading growth!
