Principal's Corner
From the Principal's Desk
Good afternoon everyone! I hope everyone had the opportunity to appreciate God's goodness in nature, through prayer, with family or in some other way during Fall Break. I enjoyed getting to spend the week with my husband, Larry, as we completed a few "next steps" in getting our property ready to eventually build on.
It seems as though our Fall temperatures are here to stay. Even though this week looks a little soggy and might keep us inside, know that as long as Mother Nature cooperates our students will be going outside for recess. A jacket, coat, or SLS sweatshirt are becoming needed items. Also don't forget that we only have another week and a half for shorts to be worn. Starting November 1 they will not be allowed until we get to March.
We are almost through the month of October. Thanks to all who have been adding roses to our rosary chains in church and at school. It is so cool to see these adding up and expanding.
Kindergarten Open House
Do you have a preschooler who will be kindergarten age next year? Or have a family member or friend with a student approaching kindergarten age? Want to learn more about our kindergarten program? Please stop by or share the information about our first official "Open House" next Tuesday between 4-6 p.m. to talk to our teachers and learn through the eyes of our current students about what takes place. Mrs. Mauer will also be present to field financial questions or simply to meet you. Our hope is to have it out in front of school, but if it is raining we will most likely move it over to the Preschool front porch.
Volunteer Opportunities
There is no doubt that the year 2020 has been full of adjustments, but I am proud to say that those in charge of fundraising events at the school and parish have stepped up and are thinking outside the box. This Thursday through Sunday the Turtle Soup crew will be preparing batches of soup to sell. I know they will not turn away volunteers who are able to help. Please consider chipping in if you are able.
Secondly, our Super Sunday Bingo team has sold out their November 15 event which will be held at the Knights of Columbus. Even though the number of participants will be smaller, the number of volunteers needed will still be close to the same. These funds directly help offset costs to educate our students. Donating some of your time to help out in appreciation for the efforts of this committee and all it does to benefit the school is a small token. Please save the date and make plans to lend a hand.
In Appreciation...
After more than 3 years of serving on St. Louis's Bingo Committee, Andy Saner has announced that he is stepping down as a committee member. During Andy's tenure, Super Sunday bingo attendance reached record levels while annual bingo proceeds increased nearly 45% providing over $200,000/year to our school. We cannot express our gratitude enough to Andy for his efforts. Andy will continue to work bingo in a volunteer role so be sure to pass along your well wishes and thanks when you see him. Thank you!
Thank you to our Evangelization team and students who planned and took an active part in our Patriotic Rosary before Fall Break. It was wonderful. It was great to have Fr. Stan and several parents join us for the event. What a great way to end our week!
Thanks to our amazing PTO and the special efforts of Carla Austin and Ashley Kranz for providing meals for the teaching staff during Parent Teacher Conferences. Thanks to all the hands who may have taken part in blessing us with food.
Archery Club
We have coaches! I am happy to announce that Ric Hertel and Justin Klump have agreed to be Archery Club coaches for our 4-8 grade students this year. More details to come, but the tentative hope is to start practices after Thanksgiving break, once their mandatory training is complete.
Free Dress
Next Friday is the last Friday of the month and will be an out of uniform day with a Halloween theme. Students can wear school appropriate Halloween T-shirts and sweatshirts, the colors orange, purple, and black. However, NO COSTUMES.
God bless and have a great week!
Mrs. Mauer

Box Tops/Coke Gives
Thank you for sending in 570 box tops for the Fall collection. Please keep saving your box tops for the Spring collection. Over fall break, 544 Coke codes were submitted for a total of $27.00.These small amounts add up and are a huge help. Keep up the great work!
Teacher Appreciation
Thank you to all of the parents that donated items for the teacher dinners during conferences. 30 dinners were delivered to the teachers on Tuesday and Thursday before fall break. Because of the donations, the committee did not have to dip into the budget and are able to use the funds for future months. Carla Austin & Ashley Kranz did an amazing job on behalf of PTO in organizing and getting the meals together. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

Musical Notes
IMPORTANT NOTICE regarding the ISSMA Solo and Ensemble Competition
This year's ISSMA Solo and Ensemble Competition will be held as a virtual event in February. Although ISSMA is delaying their deadlines to see what learning environments look like for the second semester, Mrs. Pedersen does not quite have that luxury due to the timing of her maternity leave.
What does this mean for students that may wish to participate? Mrs. Pedersen is asking for parents to reach out before Friday, October 23 if they believe their student(s) will be interested. With a virtual event, students will submit a video of their performance, as well as a PDF to show they own the music they are performing. Students in grades 5-8 are eligible to participate. Mrs. Pedersen will be able to send along the email information about participating, but will not be available should there be technology issues when it comes to submitting the performances. The cost for a solo entry is $15, and is non-refundable.
If no interest is expressed by October 23, there will not be an opportunity for late entries. Thank you for your understanding. cpedersen@st.louisschool.org

So Loved Clothing Closet
We have just learned that one of our staff members helps with the "So Loved Clothing Closet" here in Batesville. They help provide clothing and toiletries to local children in need. Their one year anniversary is coming up on October 1st and thanks to generous donations, they have been able to help over 500 children so far.
They are currently in need of size 14/16 girl clothing, size 5 girl clothing, and size 0-3 month boy clothing. If you find yourself going through your closets and have some gently used items you would like to get rid of, please keep them in mind. They are also accepting diapers at this time.
Please email Kayla Suits (ksuits@batesville.k12.in.us) for details on where donations can be taken. Thank you!

Breakfast Program
At school, there's always a meal ready to be served! Some mornings, it's tough to find the time to make sure your kids are eating a nutritious breakfast. On those days, why not send them to our School Breakfast Program? Each meal meets government nutritional guidelines and standards. Schools are required to provide a breakfast meal that includes fruit, whole-grain rich items, and low fat or fat free milk. Check your child's menu to see the variety of nutritious choices available at School Breakfast, or stop by to sample the food yourself!
Breakfast is served from 7:30-7:55 each morning in the SLS cafeteria. The cost for breakfast is $1.50.
