Mrs. Bohm & Mrs. Janowak

We Hope You Enjoyed Your Break!

Now that we are back from our holiday break we will be starting our winter testing. Through the month of January we will be doing DRA testing to see what reading level your child is at, DIBELS testing, STAR Math and STAR Reading testing. These various tests will help us determine where your child is at and what we still need to work on along with what RTI Group we place them in for a smaller group instruction that is focused in areas to help them continue to grow.

Please look at the calendar in your child's red folder and discuss with your child what color they ended their day on and initial in the date box nightly. This is a great way to keep communication flowing between school and home and it also creates great discussion between you and your child.

Math homework will be given Mon.-Thurs. Homework is doing the following day it is given. Every night a homework helper should check and go over the homework. The homework reinforces what was taught that day. Homework needs to be signed/initial nightly and returned the following day. Unit 4 will cover several topics. The main focus through this unit will be money (introducing quarters and dollars and subtraction with money) and subtraction with ungrouping (subtraction from 200, subtraction word problems, and mixed word problems-subtraction and addition).

During Daily 5 we will continue to read to self, read with a buddy and work on writing. We will be using different reading strategies that we have learned the first few months to help with our fluenecy and comprehension. We will also be working on retelling a story that we read and beging to work on written retellings.

PARTS OF SPEECH: Adjectives, Adverbs and Compound Words

We have been working on opinion writing with would you rather topics but we will now start our actual opinion unit. The opinion writing will consist of several things:

1. State your opinion

2. Transition Words for each reason (First of all, Another reason, and Lastly)

3. 3 reasons with an example of each reason

4. Restate your opinion

This will be a total of 8 sentences. The children really seem to enjoy opinion writing and this is a great unit to also teach capitals at the beginning of a sentence and periods at the end.

Reading logs are due EVERY MONDAY. Reading at home is an essential part of your child’s growth as a reader. If your child does not turn in a reading log three weeks in a row, they will be reading in the opportunity room during recess. The reading log is a K-5 Syring expectation. To help teach responsibility to your child, you can have them fill out the reading log and then give it to you so you can initial it.

Spelling homework comes home on Monday and is due by Friday. There will be 12 words. Ten using the patter and two sight words. The spelling homework is a tic-tac-toe board. Please choose three activities to do on the board that make a tic-tac-toe and be sure to have a parent initial next to the activities that have been completed. Spelling test will be Friday.
