Attention Families of Students in Grades 4 - 9!
August 26, 2022
Dear RCSD Families of Students in Grades 4 - 9,
This week, a letter was sent to homes with the parent report that explains your child’s performance on the 2021-2022 New York State English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics assessments.
Please review the report carefully, making special note of your child’s proficiency level. The scoring system is based on four levels. Levels 1 and 2 indicate that the student’s academic performance is not proficient (or satisfactory) for the child’s grade level and the student needs additional support at home and school. Performance at levels 3 and 4 suggest that the student is achieving at or above grade level. It is important to know that these scores do not determine whether or not a student will be promoted to the next grade. District leaders and school principals work with teachers to analyze and use these results for planning daily instruction.
The New York State Education Department continues to raise the academic standards and increase the rigor of assessments to ensure that all students are on track to graduate from high school, to attend college, and to be career ready. The NYS tests are intended to show areas of strengths and weaknesses in ELA and mathematics, but this does not represent all of the development that your child experienced throughout the school year.
The District is committed to working together with students and families to help students improve achievement in academic and social areas. Parents and family members can help by making sure your children attend school every day, ready to learn, and that they complete schoolwork to the best of their ability. These basic steps will help all children succeed in school at any grade level.
Please contact your school principal if you have any questions. You can find valuable information about assessments and ways to help your students succeed at www.engageny.org.
We are looking forward to a successful 2022-2023 school year.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kathleen Black
