From the Principal
February, 2023
Hello, Lodi High School Families -
As we move into the 2nd Semester at Lodi High School we have so much to look forward to in the coming months. Our winter sports teams look forward to the WIAA tournaments, our Spring Play is right around the corner and our Mock Trial and Forensics teams are in full swing. Just as our three other buildings (Primary, Elementary and Middle) have transitioned to a new newsletter format called Smore, the high school is very excited to join them in this transition with our February Blue Devil Bulletin. We hope you enjoy it.
In this months bulletin be sure to check out important resources for our senior class in our Senior Snippets section and in the ACT and Practice ACT - March 7 section, you'll read about some of the changes related to the Practice ACT for our 9th and 10th grade students.
Have a great month, everyone.
Joe Jelinek
Spring Sports Player/Parent Meeting
If you attended a code of conduct meeting for fall or winter sports, you do not need to arrive until 7:30pm. At that time, each spring sport coach for baseball, golf, girls' soccer, softball, and track/field will then hold a player/parent meeting.
ACT and Practice ACT - March 7
Moving forward we intend on administering the practice test to all of our current 10th graders during the fall of their Junior year. So, for those 10th graders that have opted out of taking the practice test on March 7, they will be expected to take it next fall.
Here is our rationale for making it optional for 10th graders to take the practice test on March 7:
- We are attempting to avoid test burn-out during the Spring for our current 10th graders (Practice ACT (March 7), Pre-ACT (April 11), Forward Exam (April into May), for some students, AP tests (May), and their final exams (June)).
- It will be beneficial for our 11th graders to take the required Practice ACT closer in proximity (Fall of their junior year) to the real ACT that they will take in early March of 2024.
- 9th graders, who were not included in our administration of the Practice ACT in years past, will now be included, if they so choose. 10th graders, will have an opportunity to get a “double dip” in preparing for the ACT by potentially taking it during their sophomore year and then again be required to take it during the fall of their junior year.
Signing up your 9th or 10th grader for the Practice ACT on March 7
Please complete the following survey if you intend on having your 9th or 10th grader take the Practice ACT on March 7. The practice test should be completed by 12:00 pm on that day and students will be excused from school at that time.
*We will be sharing more information regarding the ACT, Practice-ACT and other Spring assessments during the month of February via Infinite Campus messaging.
Spring Jobs Fair Opportunity for Local Businesses
If you know of a business that may be interested in participating this year, please reach out ASAP to Lodi High School Principal, Joe Jelinek via email - (jelinjo@lodischoolswi.org) to reserve a spot.
Bathroom Environmental Vape Detectors
The following article, "Teen Vaping - What You Need to Know" from the Child Mind Institute highlights the increasing popularity of vaping amongst teens, what parents should be concerned about, and how to talk to your kids about vaping.
LHS has implemented several strategies to combat the rise of vaping in our school including the In-Depth Program through the Lodi Community Action Team or LCAT, education and awareness initiatives led by student groups such as FACT, and the use of appropriate consequences when students use or are in the possession of vape products. Also, as many other high schools have done to help deter teens from vaping in school, we have begun to install vape detectors in some of our bathrooms.
We take the shared responsibility of educating our kids about the dangers of vaping very seriously. Our hope is that families will have conversations around the physical effect vaping can have on our student's minds and bodies, and the ill effect is has on Lodi High School's overall school culture and climate.

FFA Update
It’s been a busy couple of months for the Lodi FFA. December had our winter Blood Drive at the high school. We collected 42 units that have the potential impact of saving 126 lives! Thank you to everyone who donated this year. Our next Blood Drive will be on March 1st at the High School. We also participated in the community light parade by putting together a float and passing out candy. December 19th was a big day as we had three events happen throughout the day. First, we had fruit delivery from our big fruit fundraiser. Members helped throughout the day to sort fruit and deliver it to customers. Thank you to everyone who bought or sold fruit this year! We also had a Cookie Baking Workshop for Lodi 4th graders. They learned about kitchen safety, where the ingredients to make a cookie come from, and of course they got to bake and frost cookies. We had over 40 4th graders participate this year! Finally, we had our monthly meeting in the evening and got some competitive LDE and CDE teams together.
Dungeons & Dragons Club
Dungeons & Dragons Club is a new student activity at Lodi this year. The club started in November and currently has 15 members who attend weekly Wednesday sessions to play Dungeons & Dragons, the most famous tabletop role-playing game. Students create characters (such as wizards, knights, or thieves) and interact with each other and the world created by the person running the game, known as a dungeon master (or DM). Players collaborate to solve puzzles, battle monsters, outwit their foes, and create a thrilling adventure story. If you are looking for a social group that provides a chance to use your creativity, contact Mr. Heimerman or Mr. Birkholz.

Thailand Exchange
German Exchange
Please see the linked informational letter from our German exchange advisor, Ms. Sarah Gleiss, regarding opportunities for you and your student to host a German student in May and potentially have your student apply to travel to Germany during the Fall of 2023.
One important update highlighted in the letter is that our partner school no longer requires all members of the host family to be vaccinated for COVID, so please reconsider if that had been a deciding factor earlier this school year.
School Nurse News
Thank you parents/guardians for doing a great job on keeping your children home when they are sick and updating us about their illness. This helps to stop the spread of illnesses which have been down since returning from winter break. With that said, we must continue to stay diligent on the following bullet points below.
Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds.
Avoid touching your nose, eyes, and mouth.
Stay home and away from others if you feel sick.
Avoid being around others who are sick or have flu symptoms.
Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze and encourage children to do the same.

Importance of Sleep:
Adolescents who do not get enough sleep have a higher risk of obesity, diabetes, mental health concerns and lack of focus (CDC).
How much sleep someone needs depends on their age.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has recommended that children aged 6–12 years should regularly sleep 9–12 hours per 24 hours and teenagers aged 13–18 years should sleep 8–10 hours per 24 hours.
Parents can support good sleep habits such as:
Sticking to a consistent sleep schedule during the school week and weekends.
Limiting light exposure and technology use in the evenings.
Other tips for better sleep are available at CDC’s Tips for Better Sleep.
Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
