Welcome to 2024!
Now is the time to start off the year setting goals, goals that help motivate your children to take control of their learning!
At elementary ages, setting short-term goals and experiencing the pride in achieving them will help your child stay focused on making progress.
Setting and working toward weekly goals will help your child learn that planning and problem-solving is an important process. To get started with your student:
Ask your child to identify one goal at the beginning of the week, like reading a book. Goals are more motivating when they can choose them themselves!
Have your child write the goad down and post it where it is visible!
Discuss specific things your child can do to achieve the goal. For example: Read one chapter each night.
Check on progress in a few days. If obstacles arise, discuss possible solutions. If your child has fallen behind in the reading for example, reading 10 more minutes each day could bring the goal back within reach!
Evaluate together at the end of the week. Which steps worked? What would your child try next time? Whether or not your student met the goal. Celebrate effort and progress. Then make a new goal for the next week!
Hopefully this weekly goal-setting will help your child increase their classroom achievement as well as encourage positive study habits!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Elmore

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope 2024 is filled with happiness, peace and many wonderful opportunities for our Justiss families. As a new year rolls around, it is a good time to reflect on our old and sometimes not so good habits, and consider implementing new and good practices, as well as setting a few realistic goals.
During the month of January, students will be learning about the big idea of “Responsibility”. The definition is…Proving you can be trusted with what is expected of you. Take the opportunity to sit down as a family and talk about a few things that could… or should, be expected of each other, and that would be a good idea to put into daily practice…You might think about some of the following ideas…
Making your bed each morning before school and work.
Having a designated homework spot, and time, each day.
“Family drop and read time” each night. (all technology off for EVERYONE).
Limited “screen” time on school nights. (or all nights)
If you made the mess…clean it up!
Pitch in and everyone take a chore! Decide who does what…and then do it!
No argue rule!! (wouldn’t that be nice if everyone was “responsible” for being kind and respectful to one another.)
Set an example of how you will show “responsible” behaviors in the upcoming year, and help your child see the value of proving to others that you, and they, can be trusted with what is expected of them!
Warmest Wishes for the New Year!
