Wooden's Fabulous First Grade
Week 27 // Mar 18-22
This is the weekly first grade newsletter! It will inform you of what is happening in first grade and at Wooden during the upcoming week. Scroll all the way through each week to stay in the loop! In every newsletter, you will find "What are we learning this week?," our weekly spelling words, school & grade-level announcements, and a video describing how to help your child with his/her reading homework! Thank you for partnering with us in your child's education!
What are we learning this week?
English Language Arts and Reading
We can sort words into categories.
We can restate the main idea and details of an informational text.
We can use text features to help us understand informational text.
Math
We can identify and describe coins by value.
Science
We can sort and classify living and nonliving things.
Social Studies
We can create and use simple maps of our homes, school, classroom, and community.
Spelling Words
Below are the trick words, pattern words, practice sentences, and nonsense words that we will be learning in class and students should practice at home! Practice other words that follow the same patterns so students learn the pattern, not just the words!
Trick Words:
any, many, sure, through, early, learn
Pattern Words: (digraphs, blends, and glued sounds)
stump, crunch, shrimp, stunt, squint, blink, shrunk, slant, plant, ranch, bring, stand, swing, trunk, craft, stung, blank, trust
Practice Sentences:
He slept in the tent.
We must stand to sing many songs.
I got a chill from that bad draft.
Do you have any shrimp?
Nonsense Words:
flink, tremp, struss, slunk, brusp
Information about Nonsense words: Nonsense words are made-up words that can be sounded out. These are beneficial to practice because the student has to rely completely on the skills they are learning in class. There is no background knowledge on the word. A nonsense word will ultimately show that the student has mastered spelling because of the lack of background knowledge.
Coming up:
Mar 29: Wooden Warrior Assembly @ 8 (we will tell you if your child is getting an award)
Colder Weather
As the weather starts to get cooler, please make sure your child has a jacket at school. Recess is not fun if the students are too cold to even play! Just as a reminder, if your child wishes to wear a sweater or light jacket inside, it has to be in school dress code colors. The jacket does not have to be in school colors at arrival, recess, or dismissal. We do not go outside for recess if the temperature is below 40. Thank you for your help in this!
Library Days
Below is your child's library day! Please make sure your kiddo has his/her book(s) on the day listed below so they can keep getting new books! Your child can also exchange books on almost any other day. If a book is too hard, too easy, or they just want a new one, let them bring it in so they can try out a different one! Please work with us in taking care of books properly at home so that we are able to have lots of library books available!
