Dr. Shaw's Weekly Newsletter
May 9th - 13th
Greetings Everyone!
Can you believe we have just two more full weeks of school? It's a very busy time of year for us and your child is involved in many fifth grade "privileges." This past week, we were treated to a drama presentation by Northbrook Middle School. And this week we will visit NMS on Thursday, the 12th.
Thanks to those of you who volunteered to help with Fifth Fest on the 20th. We could use a few more volunteers if you are free that morning. Please remember to send the form back if you plan on attending the picnic later in the day. Jackson will be quite crowded that day with parents attending to support over 330 fifth graders. Parking will be tight and you are required to sign in. There will be a registration desk at the BACK entrance of the school. Please park in the back parking lot.
Thank you so much for making my Teacher Appreciation Week so very special! Your kindness and generosity was overwhelming. There were many moments when the students and I became a bit teary eyed when we started thinking about how much we are going to miss each other next year. I am so fortunate to have had such an eager group of learners and all around great kids this year.
So here's what is coming up next week in academics...
In math, we will review coordinate graphing and decimals before taking a daily grade on Wednesday. We will continue to review all skills learned this year in preparation for the final round of district assessments the week of the 16th.
In social studies, we will continue to review content from earlier in the year to prep for the district assessment. We will have a daily grade covering our review of events surrounding the turn of the century through the Great Depression. That daily grade is on Thursday.
In science next week, we will continue reviewing science content for a cumulative test that does count as a test grade. The test is May 13th. There is a Google Slides presentation on our eClass page that the students can use to review for this test and the district assessment the week of the 16th.
Note - ALL math, science, and social studies graded assignment dates for May are posted to the eClass page. So are the language arts assignments for Mrs. Blankenship.
Next week in language arts, the students will be completing their final reading grade, Cold Read 11. This test will be given Wednesday. They will also complete their final word study summative assessment covering homographs on Friday.
They will explore cursive handwriting as well as continue working on autobiographies.
The FrontRow topic in reading and writing next week is Cotton Candy! Both assignments are due Friday.
Important Dates:
May 11th - Yogli Mogli Night
May 12th - Visit to Northbrook MS
May 20th - Fifth Fest
May 23rd - Fifth Grade Yearbook Signing
May 25th - Last Day of School
Have a wonderful week!
