The J-Hawk Experience
Info you need to know for week of November 13-17!
Message from the principal
As was referenced in last week's newsletter, one area of focus for UHS has been building our partnership with parents and families. It has led us to take action to improve communication between happenings not only in classrooms, but also in and around the school and even beyond its walls. We had a wonderful turnout last week at our traditional Parent/Teacher Conferences by students and their families. There were great opportunities to connect and improve our partnerships aimed at helping improve students' overall experiences and achieve our vision at UHS.
Thank you to all who were able to come out and connect. For those who were not, please let us know how and when it works for you to connect.
Other areas of focus for us have been student hope/engagement and teacher engagement. As we look towards Thanksgiving week where we get a chance to be with family and friends to give thanks, I have a request: as you talk with your student and think about his/her learning and experience, please send me an email, leave me a message, or drop me a note, sharing what you're thankful for with your student's learning and how teachers and staff at UHS have helped.
I'd like to develop a list of those things we as a community are thankful for as it it relates to hope, engagement, and learning at UHS and share those with people and include some in next week's newsletter. As with our methods for developing parent partnerships, I know we are making progress but still need to improve. That said, it's important to recognize the work we are doing and connections that are being made.

Shout Outs
UHS Student TEAMS work still paying dividends
UHS Student TEAMS work that was done last spring in a project improvement at Bridgestone Firestone Plant on 2nd Ave in Des Moines continues to have success and has showed sustained improvement. Six UHS students used problem solving tools to solve a real problem in the plant to improve efficiency. They pitched their idea for improvement to leaders at Bridgestone and it was initiated back in March. Below is a graphic regarding their success story continuing on into November. Students working on this project were Zaiah Quirk, Aubrey Brueschke, Raj Oberoi, Teresa Gonzalez, Maya Sims, and Cohen Mott.

The UHS Volleyball team competed in the first round of the state tournament!
