Hacking School Discipline

During the school year, the staff has been participating in a book study, Hacking School Discipline: 9 Ways to Create a Culture of Empathy & Responsibility using Restorative Justice. This week we discussed the chapter on cultivating empathy. I would like to share an excerpt from the book that might help us understand why we are struggling with student behavior:

"Today's high-tech world gives us the opportunity to communicate across borders, time zones, and cultures. Never before has it been more convenient to connect with others. But the face of interaction is changing, and teachers note the effects in their classrooms. Because so many students are "plugging in" as soon as they get home instead of gathering in backyards or on playgrounds, today's kids have less in-person socialization and fewer opportunities to learn how to read facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. Kids who are ineffective at reading and understanding the emotions of other can exhibit seemingly inappropriate and immature behaviors because they are not able to communicate in an effective way.

Students who have a hard time reading others can also have a hard time noticing the impact of their own behavior, or anticipating it, which can lead to frustrating moments in the classroom for students and the teacher."

Please know that we are really trying our best to help our students become the best versions of themselves. As parents, please seek to understand the situation before jumping to conclusions or assuming the worst in our efforts. We are all in this together because "it takes a village to raise a child".
